Congratulations, you sound like an even bigger jackass than OP's friend, and that's not easy.

Perhaps I should rephrase: a non-Japanese person who insists upon drawing anime because they believe, as the OP's friend does, that it is a superior style and for the sole reason of impressing other people is what is pathetic. People who have no concept of anatomy because they reject realism in favor of anime (rather than letting their knowlege of how to draw true to form inform their anime style drawing) are pathetic. People who draw stock anime expressions that even the higher animation quality Japanese anime shy away from are pathetic. There are non-Japanese Anime artists who are quite impressive, but the mindset of the OP's friend breeds the kind of western anime imitators that are pathetic.
