I'm glad someone else felt this way. One of my last plane trips was truly scary: when I boarded the plane, the lights kept flickering, I saw duct-tape boarding the windows, and there was an unfamiliar hum. Take-off was really turbulent, and the air vents at the top were spewing out white gas and for a moment I thought they were gassing us (and I looked behind me and every single person was unconscious). I was on the verge of panicking until I thought about this film and how his character had probably experienced much worse than this already. It really helped.

The trip back, I kind of had that comfort in the flesh. I was seated right next to a pilot, and whenever the plane made weird noises or shook in a strange way I'd turn to him, he'd laugh, and tell me it was fine. He said, "if you look at me and my face is like :O then you can start to panic".

Awww, that's a fun way to let yourself relax. :)
The grim job he had taken on, combined with all the rush and hectic energy of business traveling makes him the perfect one to ease your fears. He had gotten it down to a science, so that even if there were delays or whatever, it was no big deal or cause for panic.

To be sure, there are many people like Ryan irl who could tell you such stories. Flight attendants and pilots and frequent flyers go through these nightmares and annoyances all the time.
