I don't doubt that Tommy is a lot more complex than the show lets on, and I admit, the discussions about such a subject within the fandom can be pretty fascinating. I just don't like what the show ultimately did with him for the sake of keeping its ratings and popularity high. It's hard for me to continue liking a character that went from enigmatic and tortured to a nigh-infallible god, after all.

Personally, I think Tommy is way more interesting in fic, since the show seems to want to pretend that he's perfect. His many flaws are what makes him interesting.

I still don't like him.

For me, that's why I like him. He's interesting because it's a case where I don't think canon gets their own character. They have {X} and they think they have {Y}, and the discrepancy is kind of fascinating to watch. I get excited about places where I think canon messed up or just doesn't understand itself. Because if the canon already explained a character to my satisfaction, why should I play with them?

I hate that fandom seems to either hate him or love the Gary Stu. =(

I hated Tommy throughout my youth and my dislike of JDF hasn't waved too much, but on rewatching the series as an adult, I do find myself filling in the gaps of fail that tend to make up Tommy and discovering there's a lot more to him than what we see on the surface, or what a lot of fandom seems to see (especially the extreme worshippers or extreme haters). It's hard to say I like Tommy because of the elaborate head fanon I've created to justify some of his actions (or Zordon's actions or whoever's actions), but it's definitely true that I do, and that makes me happy because . . . well, I want to like them all, and I really, really hated Tommy as a kid.

Anyway, you should delurk so we can swap fanon. I NEED MOAR PR FRANDS.
