I do, however, think it might be indicative of a larger problem within the male-dominated media--male characters are frequently better developed, more dynamic, and given more screen time than female characters, so it's not surprising if many of your favorites are guys. Of course, this doesn't justify a lack of female characters on TV either

THIS!

I have the same problem as anon and though I don't worry about people thinking I'm misogynistic, it annoys me. It's very frustrating when you really want to find some well-developed, interesting female characters to love and they're so hard to find. Of course, it makes me appreciate and love the female characters I do love all the more, but that it's such a reason to celebrate is depressing in itself.

I totally identify, dude. I think my favorites are pretty evenly divided amongst male and female characters, but I am fortunate enough to be in fandoms for shows that feature at least one well-portrayed female character. Unfortunately, one of said shows was recently cancelled while another got the bright idea to fire one of its female leads, so I'm being quite bitter rn. You know there's a problem on TV when the most visible female protagonist is Meredith Freakin' Grey (this is not my quote; it came from a great article I unforch lost the link to, but it's so apropos).

I'm sorry to hear about the female lead! That must be so frustrating for the fans!

You're lucky that your fandoms have well-portrayed characters - or is this one of your criteria for choosing your fandoms? When I mentally run through the fandoms I've been interested in these last few years, it seems to me like there have been more with interesting female characters than before. I don't know if it's a subconscious preference or coincidence, though.

What I find even more disappointing than female characters being mere eye candy or the hero's conquest, though, is when well-developed female characters are reduced to this. I feel cheated by the writers then. It sometimes makes me wish a ship won't become canon/glad they didn't become canon, even though I'm a shipper myself.

You know, that's an interesting question. I never thought of it that way. I admit getting into Legend of the Seeker b/c it was recced to me by a friend, who spoke very highly of the show's female characters. And if I find out a show is centered around a female protagonist (Buffy, Alias, Nikita, etc.) it'll be an incentive to watch it. But others, I just lucked out on, I suppose.

lkajdf;kdlsaflds SO MUCH WORD OMG. And I hate that this always seems to be associated with shipping... it's like writers don't know how to write an otherwise strong female character in a relationship without her reverting back to this kind of role. So frustrating.

*nods* Oh yes, very frustrating! It's like many screenwriters are incapable to fathom that a woman can be in love without her life revolving solely around her man and relationship.
