I agree. It's not half bad. You can't really blame people for rolling their eyes now that vampire shows/books have become so popular so quickly.

Agreed. I don't like Twilight and could never get into True Blood, but this show? SO GOOD. Wouldn't want to miss it for the world.

Gonna have to agree with you anon. It sucks that Vampire Diaries gets ignored just because there's vampires in it. It actually gets better and better with each episode and should be given a chance. =)

I dunno about twilight, but the colors in that sky don't look realistic together at ALL.

It's way better than Twilight, and on about the same level as True Blood (different target audiences, the way I see it.)

It's right behind Supernatural in the Brilliant-Show-That-Gets-Ignored stakes. :-(

Is it actually good? There just so many parallels to Twilight that I'm kind of reluctant. Is the main female character even interesting? Because that's the dealbreaker for me...

Some people love Elena, some people don't. I like her a lot, even though I think the writers could give her a bit more sass. But, the thing is, she's not the only female character. Caroline is universally praised for being all kinds of amazing. Bonnie is also completely badass and awesome. Katherine is HBIC and everyone knows it. Unlike Twilight, Vampire Diaries takes the time to develop more than one female character and allows women to have deep relationships with one another.

Really? That's a good sign. Is Elena that polarizing? I mean, is she too weak-willed to some people's taste?

I can't believe people lik Twilight better than this. I mean, seriously.

Honestly? If I hadn't gotten so burned out on the vampire trend (suffered through Twilight and I hate True Blood) I probably would have loved this show.

I kind of wish that TVD had come out first.

Hate to say this, but I found the show a bit... boring. I mean, the Vampire Diaries is good in its own right, but it's not excellent IMO. It's good if you like Supernatural + Gossip Girl, but it's not to my taste.
I do watch TB, but only because it's so full of crack. The other "vampire series" I like to watch is Being Human - it's got vampires too, but it doesn't focus on being a vampire/dating one as much as exploring the life that comes with it. That's where Vampire Diaries fails; too much of "ooh mysterious vampire, I think I loves ya" for my taste.
But like I said, the Vampire Diaries is good in its own right. Much better than Twilight.

I tried it. I really genuinely did. I love vampires. But I just can't get interested in people who float through life with no purpose and who spend all their time gossiping about other people who aren't doing anything much either.

I wish the vampire trope would go back to solving crime or taking over the world or something.

I ignored TVD for its first season because I thought it was just CW's effort to hop on the vampire bandwagon. But because I've heard so many people singing its praises (and because Ian Somerhalder is ridiculously pretty), I recently decided to give it a try and not only am I pleasantly surprised, I'm definitely hooked. And you know why? Writing and acting that are actually good. The writers actually care about things like plot and characterization, which is more than could be said about even True Blood at this point.

Vampire Diaries is an amazing show! I didn't give it a chance at first, either. The summary I'd read made it sound like a Twilight copy. But then a friend blogged about Damon and I'm a sucker for well-developed evil vampires, so I gave it a chance, after all. I'm very glad I did!

The romance is the plot that interests me the least, actually. I'm into it for the excellent human characters and Damon being delightfully evil. I love that their characters are so flawed and broken, that the writers aren't afraid to hurt them time and again - and, though I hate them for it at the same time, for not being afraid to make you love characters only to kill them. No heroic deaths for them, either, which makes them all the more painful to watch.

Huzzah for a Vampire Diaries secret! There is just not enough noise about this show! I love it to pieces and can't wait to watch every week- it's fun, entertaining, and sexy as hell- but best of all- it's clever. The writing and the complex character development (Damon and Stephen both come immediately to mind- as there is so much more going on underneath the surface for both of them) is what has me coming back- that and my desire to see Bonnie get her comeuppance (light my TV-boyfriend on fire- I will not like you- just saying).

Here's hoping for more Vampire Diaries on fandom secrets!
