There's nothing to 'get.' That's what I hate about most anime movies. They condense the story so much it doesn't resemble anything other than a bunch of disjointed sequences. Same thing happened when I watched the X movie. It didn't make a lick of sense until I read the manga and watched the TV anime. It's even worse with psychological, post apocalyptic clap trap like Akira.

MTE. I hate that. I usually happens with really epic (and long) manga series, especially ones with complex art or striking visuals that are hard to translate to animation properly. Like with Five Star Stories (or Nausicaa, even!) I guess studios figure there's a demand for an anime version but they don't have the money or means to make an OVA, or it wouldn't work for TV, so we just get a really beautifully animated film that makes no sense plot-wise.

I think it's the super butchering the story got after being transformed from a set of giant graphic novels into a 2 hour movie. That and the fact it's a crazy Japanese thriller.

That's because it was made by condensing a 2,000+ page manga series into a 2-hour movie.

For real I had to watch the movie about 3 times before I understood it at all, and then I actually went out and bought the books and now every time I watch any part of the movie I have an OH, I GET IT moment.

Well, in the movie's defense it doesn't really attempt to adapt the whole manga. It's kinda like the Nausicaa movie that way. It mostly focuses on the first 2 volumes or thereabouts and it comes up with it's own way to end it earlier in the plot.

I don't like the movie much. I didn't really get the impression there was anything to "get" from it. It's just violent and misanthropic, a set of characteristics that were really popular in the 80s and early 90s but are actually pretty unpleasant. It's got character animation far above average for anime, I'll give it that. It's one of the few anime where I think a dub really ruins it because the best part of the entire movie is watching how well the mouth movements are synced to the words. Also, the manga feels less rushed and more fleshed out. I actually kinda liked it.

I've seen that movie about a dozen times, and I'm not sure I got it, either. Still enjoyed it, though.

The anime/movie version of something always gets a more rushed, less detailed storyline than the manga/book version.

Read the manga, the movie is crap.

(People really need to stop turning manga into movie-length anime before the manga is even remotely done.)
