Because wish fulfillment is awesome? I mean, most fantasy novels are wish fulfillment and I love 'em to bits.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, so is that also true of like, every Judith Krantz novel and every Danielle Steele novel and all those trashy books about insanely wealthy immensely beautiful women and their many men and many dresses? Because that's like an entire genre that sells incredibly well.

And as the other commenter points out, I'm not sure being super rich and super powerful and super good at something makes you so different than the average fantasy hero. I mean, Harry Potter, super rich! super powerful! chosen one to save the world! So, yeah. It's a whole thing, man. It might not be your thing? But it's a thing.

Yeah, this secret made me want to read these books. Wish fulfillment is awesome.

The In Death books work because they don't try to be something they're not. Yes, there's drama and angst, but they're not trying to make some grand philosophical statement about the world or something like that. They're about the characters, and the character manage, despite their Sue/Stu traits, to be very likeable and funny people. They're fluff.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-24 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, wish fulfillment is awesome. Which is why I don't mind Mary Sues in fandom either.

People who like these novels but hate Sues in fandom are hypocrites.

THIS!

I'm not gonna lie. I LOVE a good Mary Sue. They are just for fun anyway, so why is it a big issue?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-24 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a Nora Robert book, what do you expect? With her bride books, my mom and I have started bitching about the repetitive/predictable/stupid parts, because all her books are some much alike.

[identity profile] trekkiesara.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
because they're well written and entertaining? And she's in the NYPSD, not the NYPD.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're part of the *wish fulfillment is AWESOME!!!111* squad then why are you complaining?

If you hate Mary Sues and would like to punch one as soon as her ugly-but-oh-so-pretty mug shows up on TV, in a movie, book, or etc. then why are you still reading the books?

I only read one page of a book like that and as soon as the heroine finished 'describing' herself I was finished and put the book down.

[identity profile] that-evening.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you secretly want to be the character? As another person said, nothing wrong with wish fulfillment.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
cause.....idk. They're pretty tasty and Peabody is awesome and they're well-structured crime novels with sex in em?

I haven't read anywhere near all of them, but I like em because I've found I have a real boner for competent female characters. Not geniuses, not ninja-skilled impervious to damage, not super self-sacrificing, not balls-out risk-taking (though all of those are fun), but sensible and really really good at their jobs. Everyone agrees Dallas rules because she works her fucking ASS off. I don't think that's really a Mary-Sue. all the rest are just trappings and happened gradually. Her gorgeous rich husband's also a criminal and they had to work to make that shit work, Mavis wasn't always married to that guy, etc etc. Just mah 'pinion though, man.

This is really significant, I think. There are a lot of characters who would come off as a Mary Sue if not for the fact that they work hard. Do they have a lot? Yeah, they do, but they don't get it for free. That's the part that's unrealistic and grates on my nerves.

[identity profile] hologrphcbuddha.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you enjoy the character and the novels, then what's wrong with her being a Mary Sue? Mary Sues can be sympathetic, interesting, and likeable characters. Fandom has twisted the term into something negative, probably b/c it's one of their favorite devices to justify their hate of a character.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because Nora Roberts is a good writer. Personally I read a few of the In Death books but I don't like Eve. Most people think she's the best thing since sliced bread but I can't stand her. But then I have trouble liking Nora's heroines. Also the books allegedly only take place in a two to three year time period. Which just makes the whole crime solving a touch unrealistic.

[identity profile] ivanolix.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I do think it's important to note that she isn't just naturally good at her job. She works HARD—gritty, tough, nasty work. And not everyone likes her, and she makes honest mistakes. Maybe she's still a fantasy, but she's just as well-rounded as most fictional leads, and entertaining and interesting enough that I don't care about the rest.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-26 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read the books so I'm asking.

Do the books SHOW us she's hardworking, gritty, tough etc, or does the author tell us she is through the secondary characters who 'admire' her?

[identity profile] ivanolix.livejournal.com 2010-09-27 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's definitely shown. We see all the things she does, and she doesn't get praised for most of them—by the time she is, the feel is more of a "It's about time someone noticed" rather than "Oh really?"
