Oh, bullshit. Just becaues the people here are utterly paranoid about OCs doesn't mean that you're wrong to play them. You've been playing OCs for so many years, anon, don't let a new culture shame you out of something you enjoy(ed).

[identity profile] fuckyeah.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, I totally understand where you're coming from, being in a similar situation myself. While I don't think everyone hates OCs, it is kind of disheartening to not see many OC games on Livejournal. At least I haven't been able to find any.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
They're all on IJ.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
this

ugh so happy someone else out there likes playing oc's

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
OCs are awesome. Now I love playing with other people's characters, too, but creating your own character--AWESOME.

[identity profile] postal152.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of people on LJ are in fandom because they want more of the characters they love, so when someone comes in with an OC they might not be enthusiastic. That's not to say that some people aren't in love with the world the writer/whatever created, and would be totally fine with an OC. Of course you're not 'wrong.' If it were wrong to like using OCs, why wouldn't it be wrong to like using pre-made characters? It's just personal preferences.

Why a picture of glasses, though? I've been trying to figure it out.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-24 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Try insanejournal, OP. There's a lot more OC games there, and it's still journal formatted.

I personally RP both fandom and original characters. LJ is just more fandom centered because it has such a giant following of people who use it mostly for fandom interaction. IJ is mostly a congregation of rpers period, so there's more kinds of games.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-24 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Was the sort of roleplaying you preferred stuff like D&D, with rulebooks and dice? Because the impression I've got of livejournal (as you could probably tell by the anonymous posting, I don't have an account) is that the roleplaying on it is not of that sort, it's the more free-form, fan-related stuff. Or possibly that's just from reading this place.

Anyways, there are other sites on the internet for Play-by-Post roleplaying using the books and dice that so many people are fond of. I personally prefer that style, myself.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Free-form does not equate to "No OCs," though.

[identity profile] vafaill.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I could never imagine RPing anyone else but an OC. So don't worry :)

Dittoing this. The idea of RPing a fandom character is still a bit odd to me. That LJ has a different RPing culture from the norm isn't something that should invalidate the rest of your RPing experience, by any means.

There are some LJ comms for OC RP, such as [livejournal.com profile] ocdressing.

[identity profile] vafaill.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was so confused when I found out fandom RPGs exist! I have a lot of respect for people who manage to keep a fandom character IC, I could never do it.

And I have to add, I'm always happy to see someone from CAPSLOCK here :'D Whee!

[identity profile] snideways.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Nonononono. You have not been doing it wrong. Don't get discouraged because you enjoy creating and roleplaying your own characters. There is nothing wrong with that, seriously - in fact, I have a lot of respect for people who can create original, well thought out OCs. (And there are some LJ RPs that accept OCs, as well as some that cater only to OCs. They may be harder to find, but they're there.)

[identity profile] iambic5.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, it gives me so much hope every time I see someone being this OC-positive. *high-fives* Rock on, anon. There are other people out there who like playing/writing/reading/whatever OCs, and I hope you find them!

[identity profile] thechameleonnn.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
OCs can be done right OR wrong just like canon characters.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
There's absolutely nothing wrong with having OCs. I grew up with mine and they've taught me so much about character building and development that I don't think I'd be confident enough in my original characters and writing if it weren't for my girls. And yeah, they were Mary Sues in the beginning. Yours were too, probably. And that's ok. It's not even a mistake, it's just part of the process of creating characters, specially if you start young. OCs get a bad rep, yeah, but haters gonna hate; don't dismiss your characters for other people if they mean a lot to you, because it's not other people's business.

[identity profile] tictactardis.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
*high five*

I came from a long string of proboards roleplays in my early Internet days, so I didn't know anything but OC roleplay until I found LJ. I've such an attachment to my characters, too.

I hope you find a good OC community, anon! Or if not, make one, and hit up some of the commenters here. :] I'm sure it'd go over a lot better than you'd think!

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't RP on the internet, I do it with friends in person and we've played both OCs and taken on fandom characters. One ain't better than the other either way, imho.

It's just a matter of finding the right game for the character.

[identity profile] deliriousminuet.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with OCs, it's just a lot harder to get other people to care about them, and if you mix them with non-OCs it's really easy to fall into some irritating writing traps. But all that's about the audience, and you enjoy RPing so much yourself, who cares what your audience thinks? The fun is being had. The existence of the RP is justified.

[identity profile] puppy-tenchan.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
Like people above said, you're in the wrong place. LJ has a fan-RP culture, that's just how it came to be. Try InsaneJournal.

There is however a comm on LJ where you can ask others to point you to an RP of your preferred kind. I keep forgetting its name, maybe someone else can help out.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
I've run an OC-only RP on LJ myself, and every other RP I've ever been on LJ has been amenable to OCs. Not everyone is afraid of the Sue/Stu. Everyone goes through that phase and if gets to the point where it's interfering with everyone's fun, the mods will generally take said player aside and have a chat.

So yeah I think you might be interpreting LJ's stance on OCs wrong. There are just a lot of people who prefer not to play them.

Heck I sometimes think OC-only RPs are the way to go even in in-universe settings. Because otherwise the characters people really want to play are snapped up right at the start and people wind up playing characters they're not really interested in and lose interest in the game.

[identity profile] dragonalchemist.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really disappointed in the lack of OC RPs on livejournal, and the ones that do exist are boring tropes like zombies or something (and they also require PBs, so writers who are also artists like myself get frustrated.)

Totally get to pimp [livejournal.com profile] hesperadia this way. xD It's not running yet, but after a few more adjustments, it will be!

[identity profile] kikibug13.livejournal.com 2010-09-27 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. There are OCs and OCs. Some are Mary Sues/Gary Stus, some are not. You do your best, do what you enjoy, and people will eventually see what they are.

Everybody gets Mary Sues now and again. Sometimes that's what they stay; sometimes they develop and get a life of their own. And some OCs are so awesome that people end up loving them even when they don't get to play with them directly and stalking them around LJ.

The fact that some people hate OCs in general? Has no relation to how OCs can be done. Just rock your thing! I hope you do find people who enjoy your play!
