Good decision on that front: Stay away from guys who, at worst, really relate to a prolific serial killer...

and at best can't relate emotionally to *anything* and are constantly faking human emotion/affection.

IDK, I think there is a difference between being charismatic and somewhat likable, and "relating" to a character though.

I'm with you on this one, OP - since Dexter came out, I've known a bunch people who say they relate to Dexter/idolize Dexter more than anyone because they are not, like, a constant upwelling of empathy for everyone all the time, and personally, those are the kinds of people I'd like to avoid. Not because they don't have empathy for everyone all the time - no one does - but because they think they must be sociopaths because of it, like, get a fucking grip. Plus, Dexter is so self-absorbed (which makes sense; he's a sociopath) and so self-deluded, that it would be a definite warning sign for me. I'm only speaking from my experience here so of course ymmv, and I don't mean to offend anyone who actually likes/relates to Dexter.

2) Did you ask them WHY they relate to Dexter? Was it because they can have trouble relating to other people, or because they think about killing people? Come on.

dexter feels a lot of weird conflict within himself because of his difficulties fitting in, understanding people, and being "human". it's obvious as hell though that despite his issues he still deeply, DEEPLY cares about, respects, is protective of etc many people and would die for them and feels guilt over doing wrong etc

one can relate to that facet of his character and still be repulsed by HUFF HUFF GOTTA KILL
