Not the OP, but - yeah, confidence, partially. But then some of it comes from the fact that we're tired of having to look or dress a particular way just because of our gender.

I mean, I'm not arguing for bad hygiene or rudeness - honestly, I wouldn't go as far as Toph - but really? When my brother can roll out of bed without doing anything to his hair, throw a bunch of rumpled clothing on, and go to class without getting weird looks from his classmates while I can't? It's kinda frustrating.

... I still end up throwing on rumpled clothing anyways, and I just cut my hair short so that I look like a guy to deal with it all, but in the end, the expectations are just irritating.

This goes doubly for those who aren't looking for any partner at all. I don't see why we should dress ourselves up a particular way. I understand dressing up nicely to be polite, but for casual everyday stuff? Eh.

But on the flip side, guys who put a lot of effort into their appearance, or into the clothes they wear, or hygiene, often have their gender and sexuality called into question.

Judging from what I see working in schools, from observing teenagers and young people, girls are able to get away with the "rolled out of bed" look without anyone batting an eye (certainly not to question their gender or sexuality in any way), but if a guy shows up with a nice shirt and haircut and pressed pants or generally looks well-dressed in any way, he's automatically "gay".
