Yes! The game was much more accessible, an aspect that I dislike in games such as Silent Hill. I was so confused during most of that series ;_;
The controls in the earlier RE games were an utter pain, it made the game almost frustrating, haha. RE1, 2 & 3 were "slow burners", IMO. So I guess there was a bit of a "genre-shift" in RE4. For the better!

Oh god Mercenaries was so good. The water level (I forget it's actual name) and the guy with the double chainsaw = actually scared me to death. I remember running up these ladders thinking "Ah, I'm safe!" and then he JUMPED to where I was o_o. Madness ensued.

I think the reason why most fans of the RE series don't like RE 4 or 5, is because it's not really Resident Evil anymore to them. See, what we like is what they dislike. They enjoyed the whole "slow burner" stuff, he liked the way the game focused more on scaring you, than giving random action sequences.

I just think there's no pleasing anyone in this fandom now since RE4 was such a big leap from what long time players are used too.

I'm checking out this review here, and I am mostly agreeing to everything these guys have to say about it so far. This may change if I ever get the game, but what do others think of this review from IGN?

Late reply is late, but honestly, RE5 isn't as good as RE4 :( by a long shot.
It was like a carbon copy practically, but all wrong.
For example the controls were identical, there was a "virus" again and there was even an African version of Dr. Salvador who popped up on occasion D:
It was fun, but nowhere near the quality of RE4. You can see what they tried to do though: follow on the success of course. They could've toned down the similarities however :(.

AND LOL CHRIS LOOKS SO STRANGE. His arms are wayyy too big. It looks comical xD.
