Nah, I've never cried to a fanfic either. (Or actually fapped to one for that matter.)

(Anonymous) 2010-10-06 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
People actually fap to fic?

I cry at EVERYTHING. Writing, however, takes a lot to make me cry. I think the only thing that's ever made me cry that was written was the scene in Marley and Me (the book) where John and Jenny realize their pregnancy didn't fall through and she had a miscarriage. I was bawling. It's not like I didn't know it was coming, as I had grown up with his column and my mom had told me. And I had seen the movie by that point, but still. Manly tears.

But I've never cried at another story before. Maybe it just takes more... oomph? The music, dialogue and direction in movies and shows drive the emotions home for me and make it so easy for me to cry. In fact, songs in general make me cry... hmmm...

SO IDK, but I feel you anon. As a fellow cry-er.

I sincerely have no idea how you could draw a distinction. Fanfic that's as good as or better than the source material... what's the difference? The death or tragedy or sentiment is just as fictional either way. If both evoke real emotions effectively (which is part of the definition of good writing), what separates them?

Maybe knowing it didn't 'really' happen to the character, and if you don't like it you can just click on a happyfic next?

It's not entirely logical but I think it's how most people read fanfic - as 'what-if' scenarios about canon, or as an individual writer's headcanon. Canon is in a privileged position; if you diverge from it you're expected to specify that you're writing 'AU' or 'offcanon' or 'fix-it fic' or whatever - canon events are seen as 'really real' in a way that fic events aren't.

Are you dissatisfied with your fandom experience? No?

Then you're not doing it wrong.

Crying, not crying, being moved, not being moved... whether or not these are desireable states is entirely up to what you are looking for out of fandom. Fandom should be fun and fulfilling, but what the words "fun" and "fulfilling" mean are different for each person.

[identity profile] iamashamed.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
idk why anon, some people just do.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-06 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I cry about everything, anon, and I don't think I've ever cried about a fanfic. Although now that I think about it, the only writer that I think of off the top of my head who moves me to tears is PTerry, so you can make of that what you will.

Words in the heart cannot be taken.

(Oh god I am bawling just thinking about that line.)

SPOILERS FOR GOING POSTAL

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me neither. Though props to any fic that's actually capable of doing that.

[identity profile] kasuchans-v2.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I cry at the weirdest things... 7 movies, (two of the Pokémon movies, Titanic, Intermission, Dead Poets Society, Once, Forrest Gump), TWEWY and Ace Attorney video games, and three fics to date. So, so picky about my emotional-ness.

...I've been turned on by fics too, plenty, but never fapped to one. Too weird of an idea, because writing seems to personal to me. It would be like fapping to some stranger's sex tape.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-07 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't all porn basically some stranger's sex tape? Judging by all these responses, maybe I'm doing fandom wrong. Cause I cry at stuff all the time and that other thing...

[identity profile] maskitheclown.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
You do it your way, I do it mine. I don't think there's a "right way." Does it matter?

(Anonymous) 2010-10-06 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The national anthem? Really?

(Anonymous) 2010-10-06 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Crying is the only patriotic response.

Bonus points if you salute while you're doing it.

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-10-06 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I have several family members who have served in the military, whether due to a draft or of their own volition, so it's affecting to me. Is there a problem with that? I'm a liberal, if Glenn Beck-style nationalism is what you're worried about.

Most national anthems are designed to elicit that kind of response, actually. It's not that odd.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-07 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get how anyone could cry to American anthem, really, but a lot of national anthems are really beautiful with just enough sadness to make you want to cry.

[identity profile] steph313.livejournal.com 2010-10-06 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Book in general, it's really hard to make me cry unless I'm reading a true account of something.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-06 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
OT, but OP has good taste in movies

(Anonymous) 2010-10-06 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not doing it wrong. Neither are the criers. What makes a person cry is...personal. Obviously. Following that, it can be incredibly arbitrary.

I don't cry at fanfiction often. It's happened maybe a dozen times in 11 years of reading it? I think it has more to do with what's going on with me (and my hormones, tbh) than what I'm actually reading.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you're doing it wrong. But likewise, neither am I! and I'm sentimental too. I can recall....2 fics that've moved me to tears, and allllll kinds of movies (I'm particularly weak to WW2 ones ;_____; love them though.)

[identity profile] cindyisboring.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
It is inevitable to cry in WW2 movies. ALWAYS. (I freaking bawled watching La Vita e Bella)
