I hope that cheers you up a bit because trust me when I say I know exactly how you feel (including the fact that the books are not fantastic but I want to be in Pern all the same).

Ha! That was my first thought too!

Much safer to Impress a fire lizard anyway. Okay, so you don't get a giant BFF who's always with you, but you also don't have to leap into the sky to battle flesh-eating spores (and have random sex with whoever's dragon is fast enough to catch yours/slow enough to be caught by yours).

Yeah, much safer to Impress a Fire Lizard than a Dragon.

Though, according to the Harper Hall trilogy, you still have to have sex if your Fire Lizard takes part in a mating flight... there is no escaping that, whatever you Impress!

Did I write this in my sleep? I had a genuine moment of melancholy when I turned 25 -- all of those RPG Weyrs I was in as a kid would judge me too old to stand. Sad.

24 was the maximum age? Ah man, now I feel worse. I figured I was too old, but I thought it would've been awhile ago. Somehow, it being my last birthday makes it sadder.

Man, I remember being ten and digging for firelizard eggs at the beach. Also, wanting to ride a bronze dragon, gender roles be hanged.

Well in the PBEM's I used to be in, 20 was the max age for most colors, 25 for goldriders. *sigh*

Haha. I always had my eye set on brown. Hell yes, I'll be a kickass girl on a kickass brown dragon. :D

I'm not the person to be saddened by this type of thing (no Hogwarts, no impression etc.), but hells yeah it would've been awesome to live in the Pern universe.

I adored Pern in Jr High. I'm disabled, and I read some essays by Anne McCaffery about the society and one of the things she said was something along the lines of a disabled person will never Impress no matter how compatible they are with the dragon because it just isn't practical to have disabled people fighting thread. My disability was brought up specifically as who would never Impress.

I couldn't read Pern books anymore without being sad :(

Let's not forget about her homophobia, like how only gay guys can ride green dragons when no women are available, because obviously gays are feminine. There's that really ludicrous quote about tent pegs as well but it's so silly that I'm not sure it's actually real.

That's kind of asinine. I mean, in her own canon, thread didn't even fall all the time. So... in between, I know that they were still training, but for MOST of the time, dragons aren't actually fighting thread. I suspect they're more air force surveillance and, uh, moving vans, or something. Maybe during fall years, mature dragons would encourage hatchlings to err only for riders that are indeed fully able-bodied...

But even then. Dragonets have minds of their own. Path and Ruth come to mind. Among others.

Besides... I am pretty sure riders ended up disabled all the time because of thread, and they still would find things for them to do.

I loved the earlier books, but not the later ones as much. Not so sure anymore if it's nostalgia goggles or not because I haven't read them in awhile, but the world is fantastic for sure.

I've wanted a dragon as far back as I can remember. :(

As much as the author's crazy still freaks me out, I still want to Impress a dragon. Like a green or a blue- a fire lizard would be awesome too!

When I was thirteen, I found it deeply depressing that I would never Impress a dragon. I'm not so into the books these days, but I know how you feel.

I FREAKING love your icon because it is so totally true! My three favorite CLAMP mangas all have people who have lost eyes. Hell, I bet Card Captor Sakura would have had someone losing an eye if it hadn't been aimed at a younger audience.

Oh man, I was in a PBeM club for YEARS. It was pretty awesome, until I sort of overwhelmed myself. Because of that it's a setting I always try to imagine my fandoms as AUs in, pretty much using the Moonset Weyr infrastructure (they were REALLY REALLY organized), and actually wrote some of those too.

I used to have extensive fantasies about living there and getting rescued a la Menolly and then impressing a silver (yeah I mary-sued myself) dragon queen from the stands, which would be the mother of a whole second set of dragon colours (Silver, white, red, yellow and... black, or something. Geez). Oh god, it sounds soooo bad now, writing it down.

Ah, man, half the fun of those books was Sueing yourself into them! I read wanting so bad to Impress a Gold (I'm a guy). I think my mate was like rainbow-colored, or something.

Hey, I totally had a Mary-Sue fantasy going on in my head too. Mine was being the rider of a pure black dragon who would be mate to white Ruth and give birth to other colors (I think it was like red and purple and other wierd colors).

It's painful to think about now :D I know completely how you feel.

Oh, that's brilliant. I only ever wanted a firelizard, but just the thought of silver dragons makes me swoon.

My mom and I always agreed that Anne McCaffrey was much better at writing worlds than she was at writing characters and stories.

That sounds just right! I always thought that 'Moreta' was fantastic, with great characters and a fantastic story, but all the others were only okay, even though the world was so enchanting.

Too bad she let her son come into Pern and muck it all up...

Haha, I so know what you mean. I got into them around the same time I got into Harry Potter but man did I want to be a Weyrwoman sooooooo bad. That world was so amazing, even if some of the characters were... meh. <3

anne mccaffrey can spin a world like nobody else, pern, talents, etc etc etc. she really sucks at writing, and storycrafting. bummer, because you see all the potential the worlds had, and the characters and story are like ehhhh.

Oh god, I love you, author.
