Well, that's understandable, as long as you don't think that it's the best thing in the world.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, that's their opinion, even if they think it was. As long as she doesn't force their opinion on people, I don't see the problem.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
*facepalm* Liking music from another country does not mean you have a hard-on for the country itself. Being a weeaboo means you love everything about and obsess over Japan and the Japanese and want to BE Japanese.

Am I the only one who believes the term weeaboo has been so overused it has pretty much lost its original meaning? These days all a non-Japanese person needs to say is they like something from Japan and suddenly it means they want to move to Japan and become Japanese. WTF.

[identity profile] decuvieri.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
If you like J-pop music, and it makes you legitimately happy, why feel embarrassed for it? The only people who cause a stink about these things are those who run around denouncing anything to do with Japanese culture, failing to realize what a pointless exercise it is.

[identity profile] juandalyn.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, I know what you mean.
J-Pop is mostly cute and always makes me happy. I understand nearly nothing but I don't care because, hey, it makes me dance around.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
that's what pop music is there for. to get you through your work day. so that the proletariat stays content instead of uniting and smashing capitalism and stuff. hmmm.

[identity profile] theditz.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Weaboo is such a funny word. Everytime I read it, I keep imagining a big crowd that goes from cheering ("WHEEEE!) to booing.

[identity profile] aeonamber.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to adopt this mental imagery, if you don't mind. It's marvellous.

[identity profile] inkedfeathers.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That is brilliant.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It's such a moronic stigma, it really is. And tbh I think the people who have made japanophile (erm, "weeaboo") a dirty word have a bit of japanophobia themselves.

(I could understand if the people who hate on J-pop also hated on western pop and could tolerate other forms of Japanese music. But usually they listen to western pop and think all Japanese music is J-pop.)

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Yes, that trait does make you a weeaboo.
However, the important question is "Are you a good weeaboo or a bad weeaboo?"

There is nothing inherently bad about liking upbeat music but that fact does not supersede the need to retain a proper perspective on your interests, beliefs, and of course, yourself.

Not OP

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What, precisely, is a "proper perspective?"

If you mean "acknowledge that Japan is a real country with its own flaws and not all that similar to the nation depicted in Megatokyo" or something along those lines, sure.

But if you mean the same shit I've been getting half my life about about how I shouldn't like *too* much Japanese stuff and demanding I identify with western culture and consume western media, fuck proper perspective.

(Sorry if I'm a bit touchy about it. But this is one stigma I could really do without.)

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you understand what "weaboo" means.

PREACH SISTER/BROTHER

I listen to pop music because I find indie/punk/everything that's cool to like very boring. That's not Japanese exclusive, of course, but I know what it's like to be judged for my music tastes. I can appreciate good lyrics, but a strong beat and a good tune are far more important to me.

Plus, pop singer and good vocals are not mutually exclusive. May I suggest Younha?

Anyways, good for you for saying this.

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm probably a weeaboo too (even though I like more J-rock than pop) but I do like it sometimes because it's really happy and it makes me feel energized. I'm currently listening to Polysics and Perfume. =) You should try them out if you like Ayu. It's a bit different but you may like it.

[identity profile] hologrphcbuddha.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
lol I feel the same way about K-pop. irl I probably sidestep being called a weeaboo since I actually am Asian-American, but who cares? I'm sure people out there are looking at my lastfm and ~*judging me*~ but hey, whatever gets you through the day, OP. You seem to have a solid perspective--you understand the difference between enjoying something for what it is as opposed to insisting it's the GREATEST THING EVAR--so I don't think you have anything to be embarrassed of.

[identity profile] inkedfeathers.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll admit I only know of K-Pop through the There She Is!! internet animation mini-series, but. It is fun. :D

[identity profile] corrakun.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
today my korean classmate called me a koreaboo and i didn't even get mad

then he said i was nice for a chinese person and i started getting mad

/lolirrelevant

[identity profile] aeonamber.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Weeaboo is marked by a general obsession with Japan rather than just liking some of their music. Don't worry about it, anon. :) I like it for much the same reason as you do.

Hey, I think the pop music of every country is cheesy and not full of talented singers. But it's fun and catchy and tons of people enjoy it, so... I don't think you need to feel bad about it.

[identity profile] inkedfeathers.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't tell the difference between cutesy Western Pop and J-Pop, to be honest.

Sure, there's the language difference and the squeaky high-pitched voices favoured in Japan (and the utterly bizzare fashion, either just plain weird like Shokotan or in some way dressing up like a child a la Lolita fashion)... but. They both sound vapid and cheery, all sunshine and daisies to me, regurgirating much of the same lyrics (and major theme) over and over and over.

But, I don't listen to music much at all, so I can't really judge all too well. What few songs I know, I hear on TV, so... my idea of Western Pop would be Micheal Jackson and the Spice Girls way back when and, recently... the rubbish that passes for singing on the Disney channel. :D;;;;;;

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think there tends to be a pretty big difference in lyrical content between J-pop and western pop. Western pop gets away with a lot more explicitly sexual lyrics, for one, which most Japanese artists don't do unless they're Koda Kumi. The lyrical cliches are pretty different, IMO. Not saying either's better, just different. There are differences in sound, too, though I really can't describe what they are.

Idk, when I think of Western pop I think like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga ffff

[identity profile] heyheyitsjane.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, I like it too! Mostly because it's lots of fun to run on the treadmill to when I'm at the gym.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
I love j-pop. And I completely agree, it's the pretty much the same reason why I love it too.

Unfortunately not everyone is going to get it, but hey, that's cool too.
