The first Thomas the Tank Engine book was published in 1945. Ivor aired in 1959. Admittedly this is based on about thirty seconds of research, but it would appear that OP is wrong on this?

i didn't invest any conscious thought into it, but for some reason i had always assumed it was based on emma from jim button and luke the engine driver.

Thomas the Tank Engine freaked me out as a kid. Ivor all the way.

Why not show him Ivor? I mean, don't say Thomas ripped it off, but you could probably get away with something like "The people who wrote Thomas liked this book [or whatever it is?], so I thought you might like it too."

Well, younger adults, at least. Just check the Sodor Island Fansite (SIF), which is pretty active, from what my brother tells me. He just turned 18 and still loves it. I'm not in the fandom at all, but I did do a very basic picspam (http://hermione-vader.livejournal.com/56298.html) about the show for a 30-day TV meme because I wax nostalgic about it sometimes.

Also, if adults can't like Thomas (or enjoy remembering it), then I guess adults should get out of the Transformers, Power Rangers, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fandoms, too.

I don't understand why you want so badly to tell him something that will in no way improve his life and may in fact ruin a show he enjoys for him.

If he is four though how likely is it to bother him if he is told the show is a rip off?

Considering Thomas predates Ivor by 13 years I sincerly doubt that any similarities are due to Rev Awdry ripping off Oliver Postgate unless you're also claiming he invented time travel but kept it secret so it wouldn't overshadow the success of his childrens books...

That said, the fact that anything produced by Oliver Postgate is fabulous should go without saying.

What the frak is Ivor? Seriously, I've never heard of it.

Anyway, that's not the only story to feature sentient trains. Have you ever heard of a little book called The Little Engine That Could? Talking vehicles are a trope---they're not all ripping off each other.

Does this Ivor thing have the awesome ensemble cast of characters that the original Thomas stories had? Probably not. Just to name a few: Thomas, Percy, Edward James, Gordon, Henry, Toby, Donald, Douglas, Mavis, Diesel, Duck, Rusty, Sir Handel, Peter Sam, Skarloey, Rheneas. Yeah.

So yeah, don't take a dump on my and thousands of other people's childhoods.

Ivor > Thomas x 1000, no lie. Probably best to keep this knowledge to yourself for now though, and not shatter your nephew's childhood just yet, eh?

Progression of my reactions: "Oh! I loved Thomas as a small child! Oh man, this person doesn't like Thomas? that's sad. What if they're right and Thomas is a ripoff? It probably wouldn't have mattered to me as a child, and it probably wouldn't matter to this kid they're talking about. Still kinda sad it if it's true. I liked Thomas as a kid, what does it matter if it was derivative, it was still good! And this is probably just based solely on the talking vehicle trope, it's probably not particularly similar beyond that. Wait, there's an adult fandom? That's crazy! It's a great show for kids, and it's fine for adults to be nostalgic or recognize it as good children's television, but to have enough interest in it to be a member of something you could call a "fandom?" that's pretty weird. I'm going to read the comments. What, Thomas is older. OP is pretty full of it."
