It's a troll, right?

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
What? Why would it be? They're right.

Well, I don't know the fandom or the culture. But expecting people's actions and intentions fit with your own culture (especially when it's a rather different one rather than just Britain/America) is.... a bit stupid.

Not everybody conforms to the American standard. Hell, not all Americans do. And if the culture is as you say...

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Your America is very liberal compared to Korea.

I figured. Doesn't take away from my point.

[identity profile] demiincarnate.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It does, actually... I'd imagine Koreans would be much less likely to be so scandalous publicly, considering they'd be more exposed to persecution. Though I don't know much about Korea either.

No, my point was that people's cultures and society change all over the place, even within the same country. And it's stupid to not take that into account. It's especially stupid when said different culture is so far removed from your own, like Korea from America, rather than the common America Vs Britain thing you see in many fandoms. Though it can still be a bit daft then.

So America being more liberal than Korea doesn't actually detract from that point. Kinda fits in with it actually.

Wait, were you agreeing with or contesting the statements in the secret, then? I'm all confused.

Agreeing with, pretty much. Or at least, the idea of them - I don't actually know much about Korea and they could be full of it for all I know but I think probably not.

[identity profile] demiincarnate.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Oh now I understand! I'm terribly sorry. I misread your comment and thought you were disagreeing with the secret. Now I understand what you're saying.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a shame actually, that I agree.
I think the Koreans in the entertainment business that do come out are so brave, they go through some really horrible things for being who they are.
Hopefully Korea will get past this and one day it'll be a better country for it. < And that could be applied to lots of countries, not just SK.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well yeah no shit.

[identity profile] fivil.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Fans from other cultures often misconstrue Korean tendency to be very affectionate and physical with close friends of the same sex, and the fact that popstars over there tend to play this up as fans seem to like it. This point I agree with.

The way you phrase things smells of trolling, though. Tinhatting two American rockband members or two Australian comedians is not that radically different from tinhatting two Korean popstars.

I've heard it theorised that one reason straight men in the West tend to avoid being physically affectionate with their friends is that having out queers as part of your culture results in a sort of homophobia that tells men to be really, really clear about their straightness. If 'being gay' is seen as a possibility - albeit a bad one - straight men have to avoid any appearance of closeness with other men.

This doesn't seem to apply to women. I guess for the same reason that bi men get told they're really gay and bi women get told we're really straight - sex is only a big deal if you're doing it with a guy.

fangirls still pair pop idol group members together in fanfictions. It's not just an American thing, but homosexuality is played a lot more as fantasies for women than a reality (it's still fantasy in America, too, but not to a degree like there is in Korea).

It's turning very slightly. Acceptance isn't there, but acknowledgment is something people are striving for. I know of two films about gay men/boys made by a gay director, and I know there's one documentary about three lesbian girls trying to be who they are in Korean society. It's really sad how many closeted homosexuals there are in Korea, but hopefully it'll change in the future (along with a lot of other social problems).

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
The same applies to Japan. It always bugs me to hear weaboo fangirls saying how easy it must be to be gay in Japan "because there is so much yaoi and gay media". But that's the problem - homosexuality is either used as something to be fapped over or something to laugh and joke about in the Japanese media. Homosexuality is never dealt with seriously and there are next to no services in the country to help people who might be discovering their sexuality or struggling with it.

Japan is not as open minded as people might think (it's still a very traditional country in many respects) and homosexuality is generally something that is frowned upon and looked at as some sort of mental disease.
I've heard stories of gay people/couples who have been refused jobs or houses based on their sexuality and how it will make the community look.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
still traditional? Japan was actually traditionally a lot more accepting of homosexuality. it's only been in the last couple hundred years since they interacted with the West that they began taking a more conservative stance in order to appear more "civilized" to the West

Korea's histroy I have no idea about, though.

Wait, wait, back up - you're saying there are cultures where homosexuality is stigmatized and poorly represented in media?

Well, I never!

OP of the secret that was re-secreted here.

Dude, I am so aware of this. The original secret is really more about me slapping myself in the face over my own delusions. I know I'm being stupid but I'm tinhatting anyway. I bought into exactly what bands like SHINee are trying to sell me. Thus the final comment of 'lol me'.
