I don't think panelling, visuals and layout really have that much to do with writing, anon.

I'll give HINABN credit for those aspects, but the only thing it's really lacking is good writing.

Actually, they do. Scriptwriters for comics write in panel direction and how the panel looks (examples: over the shoulder, birds eye view, etc), and if you have shitty paneling, in the layout, you don't convey the story.

I can see what you're saying - that they supplement each other - but if your story is sparse and poorly-written but your panelling is good, you're not exactly telling an effective story with good panelling alone. I don't think the visuals can always just speak for themselves in a webcomic when the story is falling flat.

I certainly agree with that, which is one reason I still have no interest in the movie Avatar.

Good call.

Not all comic writers do that, though

Ok, so they do it wrong. Doesn't change how MOST of the industry is run, whether online or not.

Oh LOL
I didn't realize there were right and wrong ways to write for comics, my bad

Jee, there aren't professionals doing this at all, nope.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
You're...you're joking, right?

I mean, there's not a "right and wrong" way as in "Scenes with XYZ must be drawn from a birdseye view" or however it goes. But there's a right and wrong way to write anything. There's a right and wrong way to tell a story in prose (ie: oodles of adverbs, weak conflict, flat character=Doing it wrong). There's certainly right and wrong ways of making a movie. Comics are a visual medium--if the artist and writer aren't taking visual storytelling into the equation as well as the actual words on the page, then it may as well be prose.

Just because there's a lot of ways to do something right doesn't mean that there isn't a way to screw it the hell up.

OP

But what exactly is this 'good writing'? Is it the plot? The characters? If HINABN is to be criticized for having bad writing, I just want to know how people are defining 'bad writing'.

I think that visual storytelling is to comic writing as prose style is to conventional narrative writing. Separating 'art' and 'writing' (by which people often seem to mean just dialogue) in comic writing just seems a bit artificial to me. Not all artistic aspects/elements are part of comic writing, but some certainly are.

IDK man, it isn't the epic slice of whatever people were looking for. I wish it updated more regularly, rather than weeks of nothing with occasional bursts of a page every day, but read in one go it really has pretty decent pacing. Most pages end on a cute/funny/dramatic note (subjective!hello - obviously not every reader will agree). The chapter missions are resolved while the overall theme of 'things get more screwed up for the characters' continues.

It could be done better in a lot of ways, but it isn't really bad writing (aside from some grammar and spelling mix ups which are sometimes fixed). On a personal taste note, a webcomic that integrates visual story telling as well as HINABN does is sure as heck gonna grab my interest more than a poorly drawn comic with supposedly genius writing. I'll friggin' grab a book if the art isn't adding anything to the story (which isn't an attack on stick figure comics, some of those use the look to great effect).
