How can you get off on that? That book is not only disturbing but deeply, deeply depressing. Like Abandon all hope, ye who enter here depressing.

But, in the end, she turned out surprisingly (to the lead character, anyway) normal. Underwhelmingly plain and ordinary.

yeah, you are missing something because Lolita dies in childbirth. It's in the beginning of the book. And she really wasn't normal. She was a kid who runaway from one child molester to another one then to another guy, who wasn't a child molester but wasn't a prize winner, himself. He just happened to be the guy she latched on. And she wound up barefoot and pregnant to someone whom she really didn't care about and was living on the edges of poverty. So much so, she was willing to take money from the original child molester who ruined her life.

She was a freakin' mess.

Okay, I read a lot of Nabokov novels and miss a lot of things in them, but I think my dumbest oversight yet is not realizing that Lolita died in childbirth. I've read this book three times. PLEASE TELL ME THIS IS ONLY MILD IDIOCY.

It's only mild idiocy. I'd finished rereading it a day before this secret was published and I didn't notice it either. The death is in the forward, but her name is given as Mrs. Richard F Schiller, which isn't mentioned until the end of the book so even if it's a reread it's not a hard thing to miss.

I think people are more worried that you picked up Lolita with the initial intention to get off to it, regardless of your inability to do so once you read it.
