Don't forget also that veganism means no leather clothing of any kind.

Actually, I dated a guy who read the ingredient label on EVERYTHING he ate (which is often the sign of an eating disorder, just sayin') to make sure it was completely devoid of animal byproducts, including shit like certain food dyes that are made from insects (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmine) (even though I'm pretty sure all food dyes in mass-produced pre-packaged foods are synthetic, he was convinced that all food coloring came from crushed insect shells).

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That... is pretty much going to make me lol forever.

I could never give up candy and desserts. You'd be surprised how many have gelatin.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
LOL. You don't have to give up candy and desserts to be vegan. If you did I would probably be a lot thinner.

[identity profile] zombie-virus.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
if they have gelatin in them, you do. I read somewhere that gelatin is made from cow bones or something like that :P

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
Not all of them, just... a lot. And croquettes. Which. Oh God that would be so tragic.

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I used to obsessively read the labels on candy to avoid things with gelatin in them...

...I think I'm going to start doing that again. Thanks for reminding me!

Don't forget also that veganism means no leather clothing of any kind.

That's just the vegetarians. Vegan = no leather, suede, silk, or wool.

even though I'm pretty sure all food dyes in mass-produced pre-packaged foods are synthetic, he was convinced that all food coloring came from crushed insect shells

Cochineal/carmine is made from insects.

So basically vegan knitters can only use cotton or nasty, nasty acrylics. There's another reason never to be vegan.

There's another reason never to be vegan.

Uhuh. Because fashion is the most important thing ever :)

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's not even about fashion. This is about comfort. I am currently wearing a handknit pure merino cardigan. It is not fashionable, but it is warm and functional. If this was acrylic, I would have scratched myself to death already.

There's a big difference between taking things out of your life that you could miss and making yourself purposely uncomfortable.

[personal profile] redseeker 2010-10-09 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
This is about comfort

Oh, comfort? Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realise. How silly of me. Of course, that is terribly important, after all.

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, how dare I want to be warm and shit. I should sit here and be cold so I can save the poor widdle animals. Or I could never let any fresh air into the house and just turn on all the heaters and use tons of energy! That's so much better!

[identity profile] alenxa.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Wow...where are you getting your acrylic? Most every synthetic I've worked with is TONS better than Super Saver. (I find Deborah Norville Serenity to be particularly cushy.) Also, there's bamboo, hemp, corn, and soy yarn out there, but they're often blended with non-vegan fibers so those who have issues (I don't) still need to watch out.

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Acrylic is itchy, end of story. I have pricey acrylic sweaters and they ALL itch. Massively dry skin is a bitch.
I don't know what super saver is so yeah.
Bamboo yarn, I only like for socks :/
And sorry, I just don't think any of those ~alternative~ yarns are as comfortable or do the job as well as plain damn virgin merino. It might also be an issue of availability since all the special stuff is hard to find here and, of course, more expensive.

[identity profile] alenxa.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
*shrug* Different skin for different folks, then. Whatever works best. My mom has always complained about how itchy wool is, but I love me some good merino. Only, where I live, that's what's more expensive, and anything but worsted weight is hard to find.

(Red Heart Super Saver, BTW, is a coarse, cheap acrylic yarn with a stiff hand and inferior drape. It's good for slipper outsoles, crocheted toys, home-decor items, and practicing your stitches. Slightly less effective at sanding wood and peeling paint.)

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
I never said merino is cheap, but that and pure wool superwash stuff is pretty much what's available here if you want to make something that's not horrible, cheap or tacky. It's a little annoying, because I'm looking for some silk yarn, but...

And that just sounds horrid.

FFS, someone doesn't have an eating disorder because they read the ingredient label on everything they eat. That's just idiotic. Yes, vegans read labels. We do it because we can't magically know whether or not there are animal ingredients in something without READING THE LABEL.

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I have such an unbelievable amount of respect for those sorts of people. I would honestly be just like that, if I had the patience for it.

And yes, I'm someone who doesn't wear leather. Harass me all you want for it.
thene: Happy Ponyo looking up from the seabed (hurt me)

[personal profile] thene 2010-10-09 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
So reading labels < not reading labels and therefore being willfully ignorant of whatever you're shoving in your gob? That...seriously, I am trying to think of a way in which that could possibly make sense and am coming up blank. I mostly don't read labels myself, but the idea that that makes me superior to someone who does

One of my two irl bffs is a label-reading vegan, and she's noted before now that it makes her more aware of what she's eating in ways way beyond the vegan aspect. That got me more into label-reading because even though I don't have any allergies or strict food preferences, I am interested in knowing what I am consuming.

The idea that having concerns about intensive animal farming is a bad thing is...boggling, just boggling. If I buy fairtrade coffee or cocoa because I do not want to eat things made by slaves then does that make me a lolworthy disordered person too?

(My bff prefers to avoid shellac and other insect-based dyes but isn't too fussy about it, and we had a phase of calling sour skittles 'beetles' because they do contain shellac and she ate them anyway. btw I've never met a vegan who avoids wool, and I know many who don't avoid honey, because both those things are produced in a way that doesn't cause direct harm to the animals we source them from - unlike, say, eggs or milk.)

Lol. My eating disorder is called 'Keeping Kosher'.
