I guess what is considered 'pretentious' differs depending on what kind of people you hang out with :T Totally agree about The Bell Jar and Catcher in the Rye though - was forced to read them in school and they only made me despise the authors. I also actually read the entirety of the Fountainhead and enjoyed it in a sort of "Wow, this is messed up!" way. Even I couldn't get through Atlas Shrugged though, ughhh, what a trainwreck (lol) of a book.

I read Catcher in the Rye for school too, and I actually think I grew to like it because of how my classmates and I made fun of it. (This sort of unintentional humor can "save" some books, but not others.) The best part was that our teacher had issues with it too, so we'd rip on it in class.

See, the reference to "unintentional humor" makes me wonder if you did understand a really, really key point about Catcher that too many people miss: We are not supposed to believe that Holden is smart and right.

I really don't understand how people don't get this, and at first I couldn't even believe it, but there really are people who read the book, and throw it down in disgust and say "Man, Holden is always complaining about 'phonies' but he's pretty damn phony himself!" and they actually think that they're talking about something not intended by the author. It's the whole point, folks. The whole point is that Holden is hitting a crisis because he doesn't want to live in the adult world of social lies and hypocrisy and losing innocence but he's already there, doing those things.

I dunno, maybe you'll roll your eyes and say "I got that, thanks, it's totally obvious; it was other reasons that made me not like it" but I really have run into people who didn't know that Holden was supposed to be recognized as an unreliable narrator.
