Over the years I've learned to deal by generally refusing to take fandom drama seriously, but it takes a really thick skin and high tolerance for wankery that most fans who, as you say, are not part of the problem don't have the stomach for. Those sorts of fans can usually find little pockets of sanity in the madness and pretty much stay there exclusively, so it might be those fans telling newbies that there's no wank or drama, but they're so used to their own little corner of fandom they've lost perspective.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)The worst part is I thought I HAD found a small non-wanky corner of fandom in my last fandom. And I thought I knew what to avoid... of course it turns out that I ended up having people on my friends list who started getting far more intense about certain elements of the show than I wanted to deal with (and even worse I had people on opposite sides of a petty debate that was brewing). It got to a point where the best thing I could do for all invloved was shut down my journal and walk away.
Of course *I* got labeled the drama queen even though I left so I wouldn't get into the middle of drama. I guess leaving fandom is always seen as a flounce even if it's done for the purposes of stopping something before it has a chance to happen.
