I actually experience the opposite: my rare fandoms and rare pairings get FAR fewer comments than my couple of forays into the popular stuff. It's almost enough to make me want to give up on my tiny wee fandoms, and just write stuff that at least one other person besides me and my beta will be interested in.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-11 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's that simple. People want to encourage more fic of rare pairings and small fandoms, so they are more likely to comment, but that doesn't mean your writing's bad, or even mediocre, just that when you're posting in larger fandoms it's easy for it to get lost. It's harder to bring new things to the table, and chances are you are writing against people who aren't just good writers, but who are really fucking excellent, so something that is really good might not get commented on because there's only so many times you can say 'this is great!' before the appeal wears off, especially when you keep getting new fic of a pairing/for a fandom.

[identity profile] 1strangepirate.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah

plus it's much easier for your writing (regardless of quality!) to get lost in a fandom that gets dozens of stories a day or week from many authors of varying quality compared to one or two a month from the same people haha

(Anonymous) 2010-10-11 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends, in my view. I mean, yes, quality should translate but sometimes it's not so much about quality as it is about being a recognizable writer. That's why a BNF in one fandom may find popularity in another - people recognize the username, click on the stories, enjoy them etc. In big fandoms people - including myself - rely a lot on recs and "word of mouth" as it exists online amongst other fans, rather than just reading everything or trying everything because the quality can vary. So they may lose out on really good fics..

That's why I love a good anon fic/kink meme. It equals the playing field a little with regards to that.

But hey continue loving your smaller fandoms. I know I've dumped my bigger fandoms in favour of my smaller, active-but-not-overwhelming fandoms.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. In a bigger pairing you can't be kind of in and out. You have to be around a lot and consistently contributing because there's just so much fic floating around. Also, in bigger pairings if you pay a lot of attention then you'll pick up what the trends are and what people are liking and not liking.

In a smaller pairing you don't have to work as hard for the same effect, but the ceiling for how much reward is possible is much lower. It's also easier to make friends.

I'm involved in a big pairing in a big fandom, and then a pretty small pairing in a medium sized fandom. I get a lot of satisfaction out of both, but the way I approach them is very very different.

:)

[identity profile] aquaricom.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You are exactly my favorite kind of author, and that is exactly the reason fans like me would follow you. Thank you~!

(Anonymous) 2010-10-11 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll confess to being a lot more likely to comment when I read a story for a rare pair or small fandom than I am when reading something there's a ton of out there. Then again, I find the best stuff quality-wise is usually written for small fandoms and rare pairs.

[identity profile] haikitteh.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Rare pairs are such a treat, how can we not comment on them when they're done well? And let's face it, when I see a common pairing with 30 comments already on it, I rarely join in the chorus - unless it REALLY knocked me out. They're already feeling the love, one more in the orgy won't matter. But when I see someone sticking their neck out for a rare pair, and the writing is good (key!), I jump in with encouragement and gratitude.

Trust yourself, anon. People comment when they like the writing. If they read it and don't like it, doesn't matter how rare the pair, you won't get a comment.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-12 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I have a lot of opinions about this. I agree with a bunch of previous commenters on the recs/word of mouth/fans of rarer pairings tend to comment more because of the relatively little they have to read. ALSO, I think that in very big fandoms people tend to judge quality on comment-count, if that makes sense, so you're at a disadvantage to begin with for the reasons mentioned and then you might not draw in more readers because of your low comment count. A self-fulfilling prophecy! Of misery. Also, I think after a point in very big fandoms, there's sort a conflation of fanon and canon so if you don't do a lot of reading and writing in that fandom, you may be OOC by its standards even if it feels canon-accurate. And it's not just that - fandoms seem to have very specific trends so what's popular in one fandom might not be popular in another, even if it's still objectively excellent. TL;DR I bet your fic is really good; it's tough to gauge how fandom will react to a thing, there are a lot of factors to popularity in fandom.

[identity profile] dark-kaomi.livejournal.com 2010-10-12 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily. You may be better at writing the tiny fandoms/ rare pairs than the other stuff because you want them to be better or you know them better. Also just because you don't get comments doesn't mean you aren't good. Don't let it get you down anon and just find happiness in what you have. You'll feel better.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-12 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
I read for the pairing, and do not follow an author into others no matter how skilled. If I don't know the fandom or don't like the pairing, I won't read it, even if I enjoyed the author's other work.

[identity profile] inkedfeathers.livejournal.com 2010-10-12 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Rather than something as grand as all of that, it could simply before for the reason you mentioned: the size of the fandom.

So many different people writing, unlike in your tinier fandoms, that you simply don't get noticed because everybody's too busy wading through the hundreds of other writers out there.

Maybe you should promote your fics more?

I can understand why this would make you doubt yourself, anon, but I don't think you should let it worry you. I agree with the others who said that fic gets overlooked in big fandoms. I know I don't read all the fic with interesting summaries/I know is from good authors for my popular fav pairings, but when I come across fic for one of my rare pairings, I make it a point to read (and review!) I'm an opportunistic Slytherin, so I hope it will encourage more fic for my rare pairings XD

[identity profile] sergeanthowarth.livejournal.com 2010-10-12 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It might depend on the medium, because I make fanvids and I've seen the exact opposite. I've made a lot of different Doctor Who fanvids, both nuwho and classic who, and really think my best ones are the classic vids but guess which one has about 10 times as many views and comments as any of the others? The 10/Rose vid.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-12 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
No way is this the person I'm thinking of, but on the off chance it is:

I love your rarepairs. I love them because not only do you pick a pairing that isn't often written, you pick characters from the outskirts of the show and perfectly capture their essence from what little is there. You make them into complete people. It's thrilling to read something that expands the world I'm familiar with and your rarepairs do that. I love them.

You have a bunch of stories featuring a popular canon pairing as well. I'm sure they're good, but tbh I hate that pairing and have no interest in reading them. In fact, I rarely read any story that doesn't feature my favorite character. It has nothing at all to do with you.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-13 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I always comment positively on rarepairs that I love, regardless of quality. I see it as encouragement (and hopefully other people will see the comment ratio and start writing that pairing too).

Sorry.
