I like it better if only for Michael Imperioli's hair and mustache. Best TV mustache since Magnum P.I.

I was scrolling past, saw this, and went "why is there a picture of my dad in the 70s on F!S?"

/cool story bro

Yeah.

How come? (Not judging at all, just genuinely curious.)

[identity profile] phoeliac.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Does nationality really come into it? Most people I've seen really hating on it were American. Not being argumentative or anything, I've just genuinely not seen any nationality-based hate for it.

Usually, nationality does come into play. I've seen people arguing which version was better and many times this scene happened;

FAN 1: I actually like the US remake of the series better.
FAN 2: Are you American?
FAN 1: Ah, yeah, why?
FAN 2: You would like it better. Because the remake was dumbed down and full of gun fights and unnecessary explosions. Perfect for the American mindset. You simply don't get the subtle differences that the BBC version had. Just another stupid American remake for stupid Americans who are too stupid to handle foreign accents.
FAN 1: Wow, chee, thanks for that.

Though, if you think this is bad you should see the fights over "Let the Right One In"/"Let Me In" movies. This doesn't even touch it.

I've read comments from Americans who had seen both shows saying they preferred the remake because the cultural references made them feel more nostalgic. I'm an American that adores the UK version and couldn't sit through more than a few minutes of the US version, but I do think that's a pretty valid argument. Other than that I don't see where nationality would make a difference.

[identity profile] immortality.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I really cannot disagree harder.

For fuck's sake WHY?

[personal profile] deborak 2010-10-11 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. I loved the upbeat ending.

[identity profile] foxybanana.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I was kind of alright with it until the ending. The ending completely ruined the entire thing for me. I'm still pissed.

I prefer the original, but it should be said that my list of reasons as to why starts with "Harvey Keitel, you are a great actor, but you are simply not Gene Hunt."

[identity profile] zonko-rose.livejournal.com 2010-10-12 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
which is a totally valid reason imo.

I prefer the original, but I did enjoy the American version.

If they had a chance to finish the thing instead of be all last minute "LOL IT'S ABOUT MARS" when it was canceled, I may have liked it more.

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2010-10-12 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
That stupid assed ending invalidates any argument I try to make on the American remake's behalf, because it was a good show up to that point and doing everything a remake should do and how I always hope they turn out.

How can you prefer this abomination to the Philip Glenister and John Simm awesomeness is completely beyond my understanding.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-13 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
WORD. Nothing beats the combined awesome of those two. &hearts

[identity profile] sergeanthowarth.livejournal.com 2010-10-12 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never seen the American version, but as someone born in the 80s I've found myself liking Ashes to Ashes a lot more than Life on Mars because of the nostalgia value. Perhaps the same thing is going on here and the OP finds more nostalgia and cultural references they understand in the American one.

[identity profile] avatarmn.livejournal.com 2010-10-13 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. I'm shocking the hell out of myself with how much this makes me rage. I've never come so close to wanting people to die for an opinion. ~_~ American Life on Mars would be the worst show I have ever seen even if it didn't have the real show to live up to.

I'm American.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-13 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's seriously out of proportion. You need to get yourself under control.

I watched nearly the whole of the American series and went back to watch the first few of the original. I have to admit, the thing that most struck me about the difference is that the original was more willing to admit "Yes, things can suck. Someone can be horribly hurt who didn't do anything wrong." I can understand why people might prefer the UK original which doesn't pull its punches, or the American remake which does pull punches (after all, not all of us watch TV to be punched!)

As regards the ending, though. If you like the American ending you're just insane.
