That article is pretty full of inaccuracies anyway. Yes, of course Japanese people will have no problem accepting that a character is Japanese even with round eyes and blond hair - if their given name is Japanese, which they usually are. Would they accept that Naruto is Japanese if his name was Michael Johnson? Yeah... no.

But if that blond, blue-eyed character isn't given an asian name, of course they're going to assume they're white.

I mean, I get what you're saying - and most anime characters are all kinda sameface anyway - just, that article... ugh.

SA forgot to mention

- yes, if I see a character in a manga, I will assume they're Japanese unless given other info, the same as if I see a character in a Western comic, I will assume they're American or European unless given other info. But that's just a standard of the medium. That doesn't make them "look" any less white to me, even knowing that they are supposed to be asian.

Because the Japanese standard of beauty (round eyes, small noses, pale skin, so on and so forth) is somewhat congruent to "white racial markers" in drawing. IRL, the physical difference is very marked, make no mistake - a Japanese person considered beautiful would not look anything at all like a white person - but we're talking about stylized art, here, and given "round eyes and pale skin" - well, it applies to both categories.

Aahhh, trying to explain this is hard.
