In Squallnoa's defense, they were BOTH 17. Squall wasn't some octogenarian creep trying to score a childe bride, nor did he try to control Rinoa's life, such as it was. (In fact he seemed remarkably uninterested in her before the Ragnarok scene but that's a different kind of crap.)

Give me inexplicable affection over horrific May-December stalking any day.

I played that game so hard, so often, like, a good 120+ hours played in total and Squall actually liking Rinoa came out of buttfuck NOWHERE

but then again I really didn't give two fucks about them cause I was, in my deranged little fifteen year old fangirl mind, was having too much fun making inappropriately lewd jokes about Kiros's creepy hunting skills and stalking down Laguna

Subtle stuff? Oh, you mean the parts where Squall has inner monologues about how he wished Rinoa would leave him alone and Rinoa tells Squall that she thinks she was in love with Seifer? Or maybe Rinoa's creepy 'Look, Squall, I made a copy of your ring without telling you, so now we both have one, yay!' moment?

I loved how she was like "I need his ring but there's no way he'd ever let me borrow it...oh, I know! I'll get Zell to get it for me!" Like, whut? Squall dislikes you so much that you think Zell has a better chance at getting his ring?

I think you're forgetting that they were dumb teens doing dumb teen-relationship things. It wasn't supposed to be the epitome of a great relationship or storytelling. It was just...teens being teens while they saved the world.

There can be stupid teens and good storytelling, you know. Their dumb teen romance was the worst piece of storytelling in this game, and it was supposed to be the most important part of the story. I didn't buy their dumb teen romance thing when I was a dumb teen, and I still didn't buy it when I replayed it as an adult. It's just forced and boring, and I still need to tell myself that Rinoa put some sort of mind control spell on Squall by mistake the moment she got her powers and fell into her oh-no-rescue-me coma to be able to enjoy the last part of the story at all.

There's nothing subtle about this, it's just crappy storytelling.

I actually sort of liked FFVIII, though on my first playthrough I remember being just of baffled by the squall/rinoa romance. Sort of "I thought you didn't like her. What, now that she's unconscious you're going to carry her across a bridge that spans AN ENTIRE OCEAN."

On later playthroughs, I just decided that Ultimacia was future!Rinoa, and everyone acted like they did because the gf's gave them swisscheese for brains, and spent my time trying to imagine Irvine's internal monologue. And oh, the fun I had.
