It's a ridiculous made-up word. Spelling doesn't count.

[identity profile] redikolous.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Boo, by that measure every word is made up. Find me some authority that spells it that way and we can talk.

And your disdain of people who care deeply about this is seeping through your comments.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-21 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Authorities on anything don't pay a lot of attention to fandom's social justice issue du jour.

Shit! You uncovered my secret!

[identity profile] redikolous.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
This isn't only a fandom related issue, and has not been for a long time. Stay pressed, work on that ignorance.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-21 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
People in fandom care about it disproportionally. Go out into the neighborhood and mention the word ableism to the first ten people you meet and see how many blank stares you get.

Ignorance is lack of knowledge. I have plenty of knowledge about what you're talking about, and that's how I know it's dumb.

[identity profile] redikolous.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, so people should only care about issues if you can talk to them about it with your neighbors? And? If I mentioned systemic racism to my white neighbors, or homophobia, they'd be like, lol k. The whole point is that people don't realize there is any problem and thus it continues.

You can be ignorant in a certain subject matter. But keep thinking that.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I think the only reason people think ableism is nonexistent is because they don't always realize they know us, because some disabilities are invisible.

Or something. I really don't even know. It's like people honestly don't believe we're even real or something, what with all the talking about us like we're not even here/not reading the conversation.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-22 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think, especially regarding mental disabilities, people have this idea that none of Those People could possibly be in the sort of place where the conversation is going on- or even capable of understanding the conversation enough to be part of it at all.

And anyone who claims to be directly affected by this stuff must be lying, because the fact that they're able to voice an opinion that's at least semi-coherent means that they're not Like That and don't know what they're talking about.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think that's it too. We must all be white-knighting because no one who has ID/DD has ever had the capacity to say s/he doesn't like that.

I recommend these people go to a SABE meeting someday and just sit in. Long as they can do it without being rude, which I sadly am doubting right now.

[identity profile] anydoppelganger.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
you are my favorite person in this thread :(
people are such jag-offs, ugh, I don't know

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I mean I get "social justice fatigue" and getting annoyed at white-knighting. I really, really do. But when it becomes about how anyone who claims there's anything going on is a dramahound? Yeah, I get pissy. Especially when people try to tell me straight up that disability is not an axis of oppression. So I guess that means the ADA magically made our employment rate exactly the same as that of people without disabilities? Like, instantly?

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
and aw, shucks, yer sweet ;-)

[identity profile] threnody.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Way to speak for the world. Everyone must think like you, yes?

(As someone with invisible disabilities, I don't give a flying fuck about 'ableism'. I think it's the stupidest thing ever.)

(Anonymous) 2010-10-22 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Are you a fucking asshole by trade or something? People all over the world care about it, you ignorant dick. http://therword.org/

[identity profile] kitty-wake.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
This is what always gets me. It's not solely a fandom issue, and it's also been an issue for a long time. I was reading a book of essays written by a guy who died forty years ago and if the first one wasn't about the ableism he faced as a blind person - who, according to the French government, was deserving of several awards for leading a French Resistance movement but not worthy of being able to become a teacher, despite the fact that he was incredibly intelligent.
