"Ableism" is a good benchmark. If you use the word seriously, I stop taking you seriously.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-21 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I almost thought I was the only sane person in this thread.

I don't get it. Really, explain to me why the idea of ableism is so unfathomable and ridiculous an anon that is probably replying to themselves.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't you get the memo? Only the *isms anon realizes are real exist. S/he's got magical powers!

I'd like to see hir wave a wand and lower the percentage of people with disabilities who are out of work to something more close to the numbers for people without them, but maybe anon just doesn't like me enough to do that.

*sulks*

Oh wow, anon, do ya really mean it? That's fantastic.

I'm so glad to hear that the barriers to employment, affordable and accessible housing, and home and community-based services that my consumers face are now gone.

I'm glad to see that all new accessible housing is built to stringent standards, rather than built with the *option* to later install grab bars and a couple of wide doors, and called ADA compliant.

I'm glad to see that any and every smoke detector in any home or apartment that anyone might want to rent or own flashes in addition to making noise, so there's no chance Deaf people will miss it.

I'm so glad to hear that the waitlists for appropriate housing are open again, after so many years of being closed.

I'm beyond elated to see that, finally, the SSI checks people who can't work because of disability get are actually enough for rent.

I'm glad to see that no one is getting told, as happened just a week or so ago, that he can't fly in an airplane without an assistant/attendant, despite traveling alone for many years.

I'm glad to see that everyone who needs attendant services gets them.

I'm glad to see that no one with intellectual disabilities is taunted and belittled, and that all of our concern about the r-word is entirely misplaced because no one would ever dream of mocking them any more.

I'm glad to hear that situations in which people call me "cripple" to my face or ask if I should be shopping alone will never happen again, to me or to anyone else.

I'm a little put out that this shining new day has put me out of a job, but since I and others have apparently done our advocacy work well enough to obsolete ourselves, fuck it, I'm havin' a party.

I wonder if all venues will accommodate everyone who was on staff without a problem? That would be so fucking sweet. We'll throw the party to end all parties, and nobody will have to worry about accessibility issues at all.

Any thoughts on places to send my resume, though?

Dude, no one cares about accessibility. We can access it, you can't. Who the fuck cares.

We win, you lose, have fun dying early because you can't take care of yourself, cripple.

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Who's "we?" The people who can lose the ability to walk after a car accident, to hear or see with age or damage? The abled people who can become disabled either with no notice at all or with the normal passing of time?

Or are they the people who like to make fun of the disabled with anonymous comments on the Internet?

[identity profile] neonstilettos.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, no one cares about your opinion. You think you're hilarious, no one else does. Who the fuck cares.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-22 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I'm hilarious. I'm just right. :)

(Anonymous) 2010-10-23 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
Karma is going to make you your bitch.

We'll see you in a month, or maybe a year, crawling back, and begging for forgiveness because you learned exactly what the issue is the hard way.

And we won't give you any. :)

(Anonymous) 2010-10-23 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
man, i never thought i'd say this to anyone, but ... i seriously hope you have an accident and become disabled in some way. i really do. whether it's paralysis, blindess, deafness, or a different disability, i hope you have to deal with it.
