What I REALLY don't get is why disabled people want to reclaim the word lame.

Sure, people use "lame" as an insulting word, nobody associates "lame" with disabled people any more.

YOU'RE FREE!

Why do you keep trying to associate yourselves back with a word that only covers walking disabilities ANYWAY?

(Anonymous) 2010-10-21 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I... kind of agree. This word is being used insultingly by 95% of the population. That same 95% of the population probably has no idea that it references a certain group of people. Why would that group of people then insist on tying themselves up with an insulting word, when they can be left in peace instead? It's like they're looking to be insulted when they don't have to be.

BING BING BING WE HAVE A WINNER.

LOL! We have just gotten the social justice thing in a nutshell!

OP of thread

Uh, lol, no.

Some social justice causes are definitely worth fighting about. Stuff like racism has everything to do with the race they're alluding to. Nobody is going to say "nigger" doesn't already draw associations with black people in everybody's heads.

But stuff like "lame" is different because people don't automatically think of disabled people when they use it.

Which is the whole point.

But those who are offended by the word "lame" are offended because they do automatically think of disabled people when it's used. That's the point.

Being offended, by any statement or activity anywhere ever? It's a choice. No word is offensive until somebody decides that they're offended by it.

It's the numbers, really. The percentage of people who think of disabled people when someone says "lame" is tiny compared to the number of people who don't; therefore "weak etc" becomes the accepted, common meaning and it doesn't mean "disabled" any more.

The percentage of people who think of homosexual people when someone says "gay"? Is probably 100%. I'm not arguing about choosing to be offended - that was the 2nd anon's point. I'm talking about accepted meanings of words.

Yeah, but anon's crack was that the online social justice crusade exists in that gap between "tiny" and "zero".

I think the same thing about using retarded and bitch.

I have an uncle with trisomy 21 and I never considered him 'retarded'. I just use it when someone does something stupid.

I guess being a girl I can get away with saying bitch in the same way a black person can say nigger. But if a guy says it(in some circles)? Oh lawd.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-21 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Disabled people" aren't a group with one desire. I have a walking disability and use the word "lame" as many others do. I have no desire to "reclaim" the word.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-21 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, point. *some disabled people
