Why not talk to someone who has a disability about the way you've portrayed us, though, or even (dun dun dun) ask one of us to beta for you?

[not same anon] Honestly, that would only appease the disabled people who share the same perspective as the hypothetical beta. Because if there are arguments in, say, the deaf community about if getting hearing aid is good or bad, then like fuck everyone's going to agree on one perspective.

Mmm, I'm not going to ask people I know in person to read my fanfiction for me. I write under a pseudonym for a reason. And to be honest, I don't poll my online friends about their disabilities, race, size, or anything like that (they have pseudonyms online for a reason, too). I know a few of them from meeting in person, but what if I write something that portrays a specific type of disability? I'm pretty sure someone who's deaf isn't going to be able to talk much about what it feels like to be wheelchair-bound. (Even so, I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable asking such a thing. It still sort of reeks to me of "Hey, custom-buddy! Earn your keep and read this!" Even though I'm sure you didn't mean it like that. There's no good way to ask a question like that of someone who isn't already a very good friend.)
