but "retarded" is okay AMIRITE

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I was referring to. I feel like common sense goes out the window in this, because when I say "this story is retarded", it's a phrase, a term, that is what it has become. Those using it aren't saying they hate handicapped or challenged people. *sighs*

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, but let me just say that it does look, er, a little faily to say that when self-advocates are so fiercely campaigning (http://sabeusa.org/?catid=196) to "end the word" and such. I think the ones to explain your intentions to would be them, not us, don't you think?

If they're getting the message from the widespread use of that word that people are insulting them, shouldn't that be worth listening to, whatever your intentions?

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, and I would love to. I'm explaining it here because the topic came up, you know? I've talked about it other places as well...don't worry, I don't only haunt f_s about issues ^^

It is worth listening to, yes, but I think they may be looking into stuff that isn't there...a lot of people look for the more negative side of things because it's easier. I'm not saying that to be a dick! It's just a pattern I see in general. Sometimes I find it easier to feel sad than happy :/

Not that retarded is ever really used as a positive word but...

[identity profile] anydoppelganger.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
okay, I really don't think that most people who say it actually hate disabled people. But I still think it's an ableist term. Ableism isn't just like running around and stoning people in wheelchairs or something. Just like racism and sexism, ableism can be more subtle.

When I hear someone saying something "Look at how retarded you look in this picture", I'm sorry but it really does seem like you're linking that to the disability. Do you really find the term okay? Would you feel comfortable "this story is retarded" in the presence of something who is mentally disabled?

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it can be subtle, but I feel like we're going to get into "unconscious" -isms here, which is something that has always made me uncomfortable and seems far more over the top accusatory than anything. I'm not saying you are, it's just the topic.

It's a different thought process than that. When I tell my friend "lol you're being retarded" there is not thought, not even in the back of my mind, that is thinking of a mentally challenged person. I mean, there just isn't. This is a term that has been around since before I could remember, it is so ingrained in my brain and probably others that we don't even see it that way.

And honestly, it depends on the person.

Idk, idk. I'm not sure if I would agree with Vedantam's reasoning (I hate the sketchy pseudo-neuroscience arguments) but just some food for thought :)

Also, maybe it's a sign that we live in an ableist culture when people don't realize that what they're saying could be offensive to their neighbors or friends. Or worse yet, when people don't CARE that they might be coming off as insensitive.

People say the same thing about the word "faggot" - "It doesn't mean gay, it means stupid!" But would you condone the use of it?

(Anonymous) 2010-10-22 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Not them, but honestly, yes. I'm getting a little tired of people campaigning against words. Language shouldn't be banned because some people don't like it. Curse words, everything. If one word becomes taboo another just steps up in it's place and the cycle of whine just begins again.
