Re: "retarded"

Question: Does the same apply to the phrase "derp derp derp"? I don't know if they sprang from the same origin; as far as I understand it "derp derp derp" is a reference to a South Park episode while "herp derp" is instead supposed to be reminiscent to how some with mental disabilities talk. Do you know if there's any intersection there?

(Asking you because you seem mildly more knowledgeable about this. This phrase has been bothering me for quite some time, suffice it to say.)

oh i had no idea that's where derp derp derp came from. Thanks for letting me know! Pop culture fail on my part :( I don't really watch SP, so I don't know anything about how the term is used in the show. I guess it doesn't really matter though since there'd be no point in getting mad at a satirical show, lol

On the other hand, derp is always used in such an offensive way on the internet and I don't see how people fail to see why others might find it objectionable.

Yeah, I actually don't watch SP either, but when I found out about the origins of "herp derp," which I actually have never used before, I went out of my way to check up "derp derp derp" because ... well, yes, I've used the latter phrase before. (Mostly in a self-deprecating manner. As in: "... damn, I did something really inadvisable right there, didn't I?" or "That was stupid of me, d'oh.") I didn't want to offend people because of it, so I went digging, and from what I can gather from Wikipedia:

Mr. Derp is most prominent as Chef's substitute in "The Succubus." Voiced by Trey Parker, the character commonly displays slapstick and physical camp humor, much to the chagrin of the boys. He tends to hit himself in the head with a claw hammer in attempts to make the boys laugh. In the season three commentary, Matt and Trey reveal that his namesake, "Derp," is the sound commonly made in a klutzy situation when things go horribly wrong, literally and comically. He has also since appeared in the background in "Eek! A Penis!," possibly indicating that he has since replaced Chef. He also appeared before Chef's death briefly in "Professor Chaos" and "Timmy 2000" (as the lemonade stand clerk at Lalapalalapaza). He also had a brief cameo in "The Biggest Douche in the Universe."

In many areas of the web, "Derp" is used as an insult. The apparent meaning is a dumb, clumsy, oafish character. The insult is generally used in an imitation of an idiot. Mr Derp is based from this. In the original commercial for the episode, Mrs. Crabtree was shown as the new chef.

I wish I knew someone who actually watches SP or something, just so I can check up on this. :|

Thanks for looking that up! Yeah, I wish I knew more about the nuances of the character (rofl did I really say that about an SP character?!), but if it really is something like a "dumb, clumsy, oafish character", then that would seem okay to me. I just always feel like the herpderp memes seem to make this weird, uncomfortable connection to mental disabilities though :|

Sorry, I was the anon above.

I was told that "hurr," "hurr durr," "herp derp," and various variations thereof are supposed to be imitative of the way that developmentally delayed people speak, which is why I started wondering about the other phrase. As it stands, I almost want to believe they developed separately and that one eventually was applied to the other, but honestly, I think it's more believable that one ("hurr durr," etc.) was picked up by SP and used in the episode for Mr. Derp's character concept.

I agree though. Those memes are made in bad taste, and you're completely right in that they're supposed to reference those with mental disabilities.

I've been wondering the same thing since finding that out, actually.
