Naruto.... I have trouble defending my love of Naruto, sometimes. I think the reason I love it is because early in the series it promised to be such a no holds barred epic. Earlier in the series, behind all the shonen standards and magical fights, it was about child mercenaries. Somewhere, that was ignored. The show I thought I was watching back then and the manga I thought I was reading changed somewhere on the way and most of the moral ambiguity was tossed aside. I still like the series, but the potential it had was never realized and doesn't look like it's ever going to be.

But yes, Kishimoto has consistently treated his ladies like shit, which is weird, because he gives them a decent background and skillset and then... makes them suck. :/ The fan authors wouldn't have to work very hard to do better than him in that department.
