I share your discomfort with statements like this; it's as if some straight fans find it easier to identify with straight male characters and then slash them than to identify with queer characters.

I do totally see megu's point about both the existing non-gay canon for Holmes & Watson and also the preference for subtext over relationships - but gay characters aren't necessarily going to be characters who are in relationships, any more than straight characters are. Where are all the queer single characters to go alongside the straight single characters?
