8. TL;DR.

For the love of fucking god, people need to stfu about using fanart in icons.

[identity profile] chakuura.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
iawtc.

[identity profile] ex-parle.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
And that is why I make an abundance of it in my icons. ♥

[identity profile] fairness.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I suck at making icons, but I've wanted to get into it SOLELY to make fanart icons that will piss the elitist wankers off. ♥

[identity profile] ex-parle.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
LMAO. God those fucking elitist wankers, huh? ♥

Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.

[identity profile] fairness.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh how true. ♥ I really ought to thank them for providing so many hours of entertainment~

[identity profile] ex-parle.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
We should get together and make a BIG LARGE NICE GRAPHIC just for them. ♥ To show our thanks and appreciation.

And to add the icing to the cake -- let's make it a FANART graphic.

[identity profile] fairness.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
OH MAN, YOU ARE SO RIGHT!

We should all submit them as fandomsecrets too. See if we can take up an entire post of it.

[identity profile] ex-parle.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
WINZ. I imagine it would blow up. FANDOMSECRETS WOULD BE LEGENDARY!

[identity profile] dr-ghost.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure it's actually the usage that's the problem, more like the crediting =x;; Doesn't take much to say "Suchandsuch's art" in a comment, after all.

Just my thought \o_o/

[identity profile] fairness.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Even if people did that, there would still be bitching about it, I'm sure of it.

[identity profile] ex-parle.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Fanart "theft" is on the same level as icon "THEFT" -- it will always be bitched about. ;_;

[identity profile] dr-ghost.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Most likely =/

When I see fanart being used in icons I tend to grumble, but if I check and there's credit I'm quite contented. I'd like to think that's all it comes down to... but I sob because I doubt it's good enough for others D:

[identity profile] fairness.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
It'll never be good enough for everyone. People always bitch about how you should get permission from the fanartist before you use their art - but from my personal experiences, and the experiences of a few others, often emails asking for permission in the first place get completely ignored. :x

And in all honesty, I know a lot of people coming out of Kingdom Hearts fandom don't even THINK to credit their sources, but that's a whole other story.

(Anonymous) 2007-05-22 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's thanks to people like you that the Japanese think everyone in English-speaking fandom is a fanart thief.

[identity profile] fairness.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
OOH. AN ANONYMOUSE.

It's fanart. People need to get over themselves.

(Anonymous) 2007-05-22 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Um... I think you just proved #8's point with your reply. Not like anyone'd listen anyway. Thus, the secret.

And from what I can glean from the wall of text there, it seems that the author is more pissed about the lack of crediting than the fanart theft itself.

I digged up that icon post and it's true. That person didn't credit at all, which really isn't that hard to do. Not to mention that many of the replies speak as if the iconist made the art in the icons.

Yeah, #8's tone is way too harsh. But I think #8 makes a good point. It's not so much the taking of fanart that's bad, but the lack of crediting. When people make fanfic archives, they don't generally claim to have written the fics themselves. They clearly indicate who the author is. It's the same thing here.

[identity profile] fairness.livejournal.com 2007-05-22 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, yes, my response to that secret was pretty bitchy, I'll give you that. I'm just sick of seeing it CONSTANTLY. It's one of those things that there will always be wank about. Plus I kinda know the person who made those icons in the first place, so yes, I am biased.

I do agree that crediting is nice - but not everyone will do it, and sometimes, in all honesty, I dont' remember where I got the fanart. A lot of the fanart I have on my computer is sent to me by friends, found on 4chan, or I just lost the link to the site.

Some will say I shouldn't use that fanart at all. Some will say just stick a simple "didn't make the art" disclaimer. And then there will be the people who get all nazi about it because OMG TEH ART IS NOT YOURS YOU ARE DEFILING THE JAPANESE NAME BLAH BLAH.

Plus Abyss fandom is already wanky because we had someone waltz into our fandom and pretty much tell us that we're hurting doujinshi artists by using their art and DOUJIN SCANS ARE BAD and blah blah. It's a touchy subject. I do, in a WAY, agree with what 8 said, and I do wish people would credit more, but I understand that it's not always going to happen, and in the end it's just the internet.

Argh, sorry for the ramble. (and reposted because I made a metric fuckton of typos. GO ME.)

[identity profile] meimi.livejournal.com 2007-05-28 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Where is this persecution complex coming from? The "wank" as you put it was over a month ago and there hasn't been a peep about it in any of the communities since. If somebody's been harassing you about it, then for god's sakes, report the harassment to lj abuse already. More people have a bigger problem with harassment, myself included, than what we think about the lack of credit for fanart on a stupid icon.

I really don't understand why you had to be so vicious in your response though. I mean, really, if you're being defensive because of your friend, then, don't you think it's possible that they might be doing the same thing? Maybe they're just pissed off for a friend. Who knows. If you think it's just the internet, then cool down already. It's not like either of you are gonna eat each other's babies. Yeah, maybe there's some hurt feelings, but god, it's not like you won't feel better after reading some smut. :)

*doesn't really care about the issue anymore and hasn't since the bitchfest*

[identity profile] fairness.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
This "persecution complex" as you put it comes from having several fandoms ruined for me in the past because of the same damn issue. I don't give a shit about using fanart in icons, and it pisses me off that it follows me everywhere.

I'm vicious in my response because it's [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets and I wanted to be, end of story. That's all I really have to say.

[identity profile] meimi.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
So basically you're just bringing your own issues into it? It's not really the fandom itself. I'm sorry you've had a rough time in previous fandoms. But there are people out there just like you who have had it the opposite. They've had fandoms ruined for them thanks to art theft, so anything perceived as such they feel is an attack. It's really pretty sad that neither side will even think about the other. But regardless, the person who started the "wank" deleted her journal and left lj all together. I don't see any reason to continue it past that. And for the rest of the "elitists"? If you really want them to stfu, stop responding to them. =\ Ignore them and eventually they'll go away. *shrugs*

[identity profile] fairness.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
I ignore people unless they shove it in my face, which, unfortunately, happens more often than not. But it's a never-ending battle, really, so I just try and get some sort of lulz out of it as long as I'm forced to listen to it, really. :)
