Man, I'm with you on the horrific thing. I would love that series 9000% more if there was a version with cheesy pixel censors over the gore. It's fucking funny but also majorly freaks me out.

You want is odd is that the one and only censor's note Brendon & Tommy got was for the sex in the Thunderhorse video in the 1st season episode "Dethwater". But beheading Murderface, shooting Toki in the mouth with an arrown, kicking Pickles' head off by a horse, and splitting Skwisgaar in two were all fine.

Adult Swim has since asked Brendon to tone the violence down and the 3rd season hasn't been as bad as the first two.

I really didn't like the violence either when I started watching it, so I often looked away but I stayed for the jokes about metal and their silly personalities (coffee is totally metal haha) and the like. =)

But I agree OP, it's just a bit too hard for me to watch at times.

And Charles is one of my favourite characters. =D He's so awesome.

The gore freaked me out so much I never got past half an episode. But my friends who watch it seem to love it so maybe I should give it another try eventually.

(After all, I made it all the way through Elfen Lied...)

I'm more okay with the gore in Metalocalypse, then say gross slapstick in something like Ren & Stimpy or other more "cartoony" cartoons. While the models for Metalocalpyse are leaning towards realistic proportion and such, the gore is fucking ridiculous and cartoony. For some reason if the ridiculousness of the gore/creepy is "synced up" with the art style, it freaks me out, (like Ren & Stimpy, Flapjack to a lesser extent) regardless of how unrealistic or cartoony the style is.

Like, when I watch a cartoon I temporarily suspend my beliefs and conform to whatever set of physics they have in the universe the cartoon is in. And since Metalocalypse is more realistic, the gore looks way more fake and cheesey than if I were in a squash-and-stretch cartoon were shit similar to Knubbler's exploding eyeballs are more common.

...If that makes any sort of sense at all. I kind of stuck at explaining things without getting super long-winded.

Anyway, I can't say much for the slashing, since I never got into that side of the fandom much at all and don't understand it much myself. But I'll chalk it up to a lot of canon gay jokes. (Murderface, I'm looking at you.)

Pretty much this. It's done in such a gratuitous way that even a squeamish person like me can laugh at how ridiculous the whole thing is- like Halloween prop gore, where it just seems to be intentionally over the top and there as part of the fun.

The whole show is just so over the top and takes everything to srs bsns extremes so that the gory stuff just comes off as I guess what passes for slapstick in that universe, rather than coming off as horrific (which that kinda stuff would be in any other context). And the fact the band seems to find all the death around them cool kinda aids in that whole suspension of disbelief.

I always found the gore more ridiculous than anything. Especially when they lampshaded it in dethhealth with Nathan finally taking notice of the fact that they almost died.

The gore is what makes me laugh, tbh. I mean, I'd still love the series without it, but the gore makes it better.


As for the slash, I find it quite easy to slash, though I can't explain why.

I like to listen to some metal but I have never watched this show and the entire aesthetic of metal is gross to me. Like, I will love some album but avoid pictures of the album art or people making the album. I feel like it could be something similar.

hm. The very first episode turned me off when I watched it for the first time, it was just too gorey, and I never ever once enjoyed one of those gross-out cartoons before. But I loved the jokes and it is my kind of music so I just gave it one more chance, caught episode 4 and from then on I loved it. It's gotten so far I even MISS the ridiculous violence in the third season (which is tame. Really, very tame. Hardly anyone dies and it's almost always off-screen now. :/ )

So maybe try some of the less violent early episodes (try episode 4/Dethtroll :D) first until you get used to some of the gross stuff? Because the rest of the show is really worth it, and it gets less violent with each season.

I usually watch the show with three people:

1 of them enjoys the music and is little disturbed by the gore
1 enjoys the humour, hates the music and is little disturbed by the gore
another 1 hates the music, is disturbed by the gore and stays for Charles.

Because no matter what they think of the rest of the show pretty much everyone agrees that Charles is amazing. XD

Having grown up with an older brother who was/is really into metal, I find the show hilarious beyond belief, though sometimes the gore gets to be too much. ANYTHING WITH THE MASKED DUDE GJTDMKD

Though more than anything I realize even that's lampooning the metal aesthetic in its over the top manner. When some of it defies physics, I just laugh.
