Well, the stories of Fallout games are alright. They're entertaining, and often have a few good twists. They set up a really big and really immersive working universe in which to play in, but the story can only be so detailed when the protaganist has to be almost completely undefined. When fandom does it right, they can build on that and deliver something as entertaining as the original if not more so. When done right.

You speak the truth! I find it is very difficult to find fic centering around a PC without feeling like I'm reading self-insert fic. I'm not a huge fan of self-insert fic, but I guess that's kind of the definition of player character. Not sure if that's what exactly what you meant by "done right", but that's the major sticking point I have with a lot of fic from games with nebulous main characters that the player inhabits.

*puts fangirl hat on* Do you imagine a fic with an OC, or with an NPC we meet in the world?

My headfanon is that a relationship recently went quite sour, which is why he doesn't seem to be looking for anybody at the moment in-game. Or maybe he is, this isn't Bioware, there's a lot more suggestion and a lot less ... "Hello my rating with you is 100 let us casually talk about every secret in your soul."
