As far as lies go, I just find this one puzzling.
If there was an important event, why not just go to the movie a different time?
And if there was nothing important going on, why not just pass on hanging out with them to go to a film?

I have told friends I am not going out with them because I want to stay home drinking tea. Or just do not like their plans.
