It started as a WWII comic, to be fair. When most of those countries (Latin America excluded) were either colonies or largely staying out of it.

...though yeah, it could stand to do a bit better. I'd love to see some Latin American or Middle Eastern history strips.

...and I phrased that wrong. Latin America *was* largely staying out of it, though IIRC Brazil and Mexico each sent a division. Africa/Middle East/everywhere else were colonies. Not that this impacts my point, I just don't wanna sound historically ignorant.

It was called a World War for a reason, though. The primary players in the war were the big imperial powers, definitely, but saying that the reason why most non-European countries don't really need to be part of Hetalia is because they were only colonies during the war isn't a really a good excuse pff. The colonies played a maaaaassive role in the war, the Allies would not have won at all if they didn't have their African, South/West/East Asian or Pacific colonies. I'm not saying something like 'omg zimbabwe had troops in operation agreement, we MUST have a zimbabwe!' - people definitely do go overboard with that, but the colonies weren't just sitting there, twiddling their thumbs and being oppressed pfff.

Eh imo having a country's involvement in Hetalia depend on their participation in WWII is irrelevant now days. I'm sure Himaruya looked very closely at Batista's wartime policies when designing Cuba lol. It's also like when people say 'oh, India/Portugal/Morocco/the Maldives/Uzbekistan isn't in Hetalia because Himaruya hasn't found any good jokes for the strips!' - yeah, that strip with Hong Kong was hilaaarious.

I actually find the comic as a whole dreadfully boring, moreso than any of the history course I took in college, so I think it's funny that apparently so many people took an interest in history after reading this comic. If I was a teenager who knew nothing about history, this comic would probably turn me off to the subject altogether since I almost fell asleep reading it. And none of the jokes are the least bit funny. NONE.

ETA: It might be funny if it focused on historical figures rather than countries (people make history, not countries -- honestly the comic is more about geography than history half the time). I mean, that old chestnut about Napoleon putting leeches up his ass to cure his hemorrhoids is a lot more funny than "Germany is so tsundere for Italy LOLOLOL"

Hahaha, oh, I get you. I will admit Hetalia gave me a bit of a push when it came to world history (we don't get much of it past WWII and Ancient Egypt in Australia), but I was always a history geek and I ended up leading myself to areas more like Emperor Asoka and Mansa Musa rather than ~US and UK's special relationship~. tbh the more I learnt of ~world history~, the less I enjoyed Hetalia. Now I just look at the comic and go 'christ what boring ass history this is'. Constant European history, yawn.

Haha, funnily enough, what drew me to Hetalia in the first place was 'oh my gosh, it's the countries making history! what an interesting point of view!' but since Hetalia's hasn't been about history for years and is more about tame ethnic jokes and moe stereotypes, I'd have to agree. The unintentional humour found in the history makin' people is fantastic hahaha. Honestly I laughed more at finding out that Wilhelm II had a personal mustache stylist than most of Hetalia.

This just shows how full of history fail the comic is, though. So much of the war was fought in Africa, and there isn't even a character for the Philippines (there's a great opportunity for tasteless jokes right there)

Also, it's not as if the entire comic is centered on WWII, either. I'm surprised there's no character for the Ottoman Empire since there's a Holy Roman Empire and so much of European history involves countries and territory that we think of as "the Middle East" today.
