It can be pulled off though by an actor who manages to show how lonely Higgins is during that last song. But I've only seen it done successfully once and that was in an amateur production. Usually I'm with the OP, she needs to go and marry Freddie or something, but I've seen one production where the actor playing Higgins made me cry and feel sympathy for him so that when she came back I was happy. Of course they'd probably still make each other miserable as a couple, but for that moment I was glad she was there.

I saw this musical in a Swedish theatre and surely Higgins was a dickwad with his behaviour, BUT how they did the scene at Higgins' mother's house and his song in the end was very well acted - in the whole performance they actually showed off how lonely and miserable Higgins is on his own and that Eliza most of the times is the stronger of the two. But imo, the movie in comparison to the play doesn't give it the same depth and that is why I understand how you hate the movie-ending.
