FLCL is one of my favorite anime of all time, but I didn't understand it the first time. The second time and every time since, yeah, It's got a great plot. It is a little hard to follow. If you can't put up with its bipolar pacing I can imagine it would be easy to assume that there's no value underneath.

I think that was iterated in the OP as well, so I'm echoing the main point which is: It has a very definite deliberate plot if you actually care to pay attention for a second or two, so it's odd that anyone would disparage it of that. (But I've known supposed Utena fans who actually claim to like the show and still think it makes no sense, which is... idefk.)

But do you think Utena has no plot? What's being argued here isn't whether or not the shows are good, but whether or not they mean anything or have plots. Utena is a very eccentric show. I can understand that driving away potential viewers but those eccentricities don't preclude the show having a story.

I don't get people who say it didn't have a plot -- it did, and it wasn't that complicated, I thought. The show isn't for everyone, but that's a stupid excuse to not watch it. (I think it's awesome, and honestly, probably the best thing Gainax has ever done, with Gunbuster being a close second. I think it showcases the height of their ability as an animation studio.)

favorite fucking anime ever. I've seen it so many times and it's one of the few I actually own on DVD. It has a plot, a rich one given that. As a bilsdungroman I love it so much more than the traditional shit of my generation like Harry Potter, and it was totally more influential on my own personal development.

The first time you watch it you're just sucked into the zaniness, the next few times you pick up the plot. Every time I watch it I pick up new things, whether it's random cultural references or little details in the characters' relationships. Also, it has one of the best English dubs that I've ever seen, seriously. Whenever I think of people complaining about dubs I come back mentally to FLCL's and it's totally how you do it right.

I love it so much I made an excuse to write an essay on Campbell and FLCL during high school and I submitted as my writing sample in my college apps. /coolstory /tl;dr /lovethisshowsomuch

Ah, yes. THAT Campbell. I don't think about him much. First thing I thought of was Campbell's Soup. Second thing I thought of was Col. Roy Campbell from Metal Gear. Third thing I thought of was a sorta-friend of mine with the last name Campbell. I sort of stopped trying to guess there and just asked.

I love FLCL. My first time watching it, I found it kind of hard to follow because of all the distracting awesome crazy. But that's what made me want to watch it again and again. It made more sense the second time around. It also has some very realistic elements, particularly Naota's less-than-ideal relationships with other characters.

I've never watched FLCL, so I can't say, but I can say that the REASON I never watched it is because this hyperactive girl at my old high school was raving to me about it. And the reason why it was so awesome, according to her?
