I haven't seen the original series but this one isn't bad. Lauren Faust prodced this so it's pretty entertaining and cute.

I am downloading the first episode. Should I have high expectations? Or should I prepare to be disappointed so I can be pleasantly surprised?

Watch it expecting something above average. Only three episodes have aired so far so it's hard to tell which direction this show going in but considering the rating and channel, it's probably going to be slice-of-life. That aside, this show is a lot better than it looks and doesn't treat you like an idiot.
