Ngl, totally hated him until everything started coming together, now I adore him like crazy.

I'm barely at the fringes of this fandom, so I didn't know anyone hated him. He's too cute to hate.

I don't think as many people do now. Which is kind of hilarious to me considering how much hate he got in the beginning.

My theory would be the following: because of the way Season 2 was promoted it looked as if he were going to take Ciel's place. So... hate. Then it just became a habit.

I can kinda get it, but I still love the character to death (ha).

I knew I'd love him from the start. I was disappointed that we weren't getting a manga-canon followon (with the Circus Arc and all that) and that there appeared to be no Ciel and Sebastian, but they couldn't do Kuro without them, so I wasn't too worried.
Ciel had been my favourite, anime-wise, but now it's all about the Alois.

I can see why someone would hate him, but I adore him. I wasn't aware that there was still that much hate left in fandom - is there?

Well the fact that he gouged that maid's eye out didn't exactly endear me to him (tbh it was enough to get me to close the episode and go NEVER AGAIN).

Or is there an actual explanation for that?

I could be missing something, but as far as I remember canon gives the following explanation (spoilers, obviously):

Hannah treated him kindly, and Alois been traumatized (through sexual abuse and his brother dying, etc) to a point where being treated kindly freaked him out and he could not understand it. So he reacted very, very badly towards her. She was also a demon, and seeing as Alois knew one was the cause of the death of his brother, so he isn't fond of them. Furthermore, he was in love with Claude (despite the whole demon thing), and with such an action he seemed to be... putting on a show for Claude. I'm sure it seemed to make sense in Alois' head, not that that really excuses the violence and cruelty of the action.

I'm gonna add to this.

Alois knew Hannah was a demon, and that gouging out her eye wouldn't do her any permanent harm and that she could just heal herself whenever she wanted.

(Turns out she didn't want to heal herself, because she wants Alois' happiness and if her begin without an eye/constantly abused by him made him happy, she was fine with it.

How about the fact that he is a sociopathic brat who uses his past abuse as an excuse to treat everyone like shit?

he never used it as an excuse; it legitimately twisted him.

Not to that degree, no. Alois is shown to be sociopathic way before his brothers death and the abuse. And he may not explcitly say it himself, but the show portrays him as someone who feels very sorry for himself and has no sympathy for others. He feels like his abuse towards his maid is justified because of his past and that makes him unlikeable. Though tbh I don't mind him all that much, I just hate how fandom loved making him a victim. I mean, yeah, he has a sad past. Boohooo, who doesnt? But everyone acts like he's just this ~tortured soul~ and not the sociopathic asshole he really is.

i wasn't trying to imply that it justified his actions, because it doesn't, but that's not all there is to it. yes, he feels sorry for himself and yes to some extent it's his shoddy reasoning for doing the things he does, but, isn't that what young, irresponsible, selfish people do? blame others? he's not a good person, or a victim, and he's not some ~tortured soul~ to empathize with, but, why else do people enjoy villainous, evil characters? because they're entertaining and, for lack of better words, good at what they do. even if they suck at trying to justify their horrible actions.

i agree, i dislike how the fandom portrays him, as in, suffering from mood swings that conflict with his true, totally sympathetic nature, because if alois trancy is anything, he's an asshole. not that that stops anyone from loving him... including me. derp.

Like I said, I have nothing against Alois, but i think they copped out when making his character. He'd be much more interesting if there was no sad backstory and he really was just 100% an ass, you know? The shole "I have a sad past and therefore has become cynical and evil" plot is such a cliche in anime that it's just not interesting anymore imo.

Anyway; I was really just answering to all the posts going "What's not to like about this guy!!! =D=D" I get why people like him, but I get why some people don't aswell.

As one of the few people who loved him from the start (when he was first introduced, not from the start of the second season), I don't get the hate either. Even if he had taken Ciel's place entirely I would have been totally fine with that. Actually I would probably have preferred that over the actual setup but whatever.
