ngl, i'm still bitter that the 360 version was missing stuff. when i found out the ps3 version was p. much the full game, i was so angry and felt like i didn't get the whole game. which i kinda didn't. so disappointing. :( patty looks so cute

[identity profile] itako.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
The ps3 isnt really the full game, the ps3 just has extra scenes put in to justify them porting it to a new system. The scenes with Patty are spliced in between events to make it look... as unnatural as possible.

And Flynn doesn't even join in till the final moments.

Trust me, you're not missing out on that much.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Tales of the Abyss is my favorite game of all time. There are not enough words to describe how much I love that game. Seriously, I could write an essay.

But Tales of Vesperia . . . honestly, not to piss off any of the fans, but I'm just not feeling it. I've been playing it with a friend of mine, and it just feels like a really forced blend of Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the Abyss -- and the characters are the same style of hybrids. For example (and be warned, for ahead there are spoilers of all kinds):

You have Estelle, who is a mix of Colette and Natalia; she's selfless and kind, but still a princess who is sheltered (though she's sheltered more than Natalia was, admittedly, though Baticul was still Natalia's castle, as Asch pointed out) and who wants to help everyone upon first meeting them, along with being really uppity when it comes to rules and whatnot (I just wanted her to stfu so badly when Yuri was picking that lock).

Raven is a mix of Jade and Zelos; he's 35 and constantly bemoans his age with a smile that hides his true intentions, but is also overtly pervy . . . as well as a traitor who captures the sweetie-pie main heroine of the game and hands her over to the enemy before changing his mind at the last minute.

Rita is a mix of Genis and Sheena. She has Sheena's temper and low tolerance for flirting along with Genis' brilliance and deadpan snark . . . as well as concern for friends (Genis cared for Lloyd, Colette, and Mithos just as much as Rita cares for Estelle).

Judith is basically the female version of Jade. It's impossible to tell what she's thinking, she's nearly always smiling, she's a spear-user and she's always snarking. Always.

They gave Genis' snark to Rita, but his obvious crush on a cute female character and cowardly personality (magnified to five hundred) to Karol. Meanwhile, Flynn has not only Guy's looks, but also his honorable and loyal personality.

Oh, and let's not forget Patty, who -- from what it sounds like -- is very close in personality to Anise. -.- Even going so far as to snark a lot, act super cute on purpose, and kill the one she loves (Anise killed Ion (more-or-less -- his death was her fault), and Patty kills some other pirate dude -- I don't remember his name at present, but she -- like Anise -- cries a lot afterward).

And as for plot, well, instead of Kimlasca and Malkuth you have the Empire and Guilds; instead of Luke being whisked away from the manor, you have Estelle being kinda-sorta dragged out by Yuri; instead of traveling with Colette to save the world because she's the Chosen, you're following Estelle around so that she -- like Luke, but with MUCH less plausible reason -- can "find the meaning to her life." Seriously, Vesperia's fun and all, but there's really no originality there; all they did was take the traits from Symphonia and Abyss, blend them, and then come out with . . . that. -gestures to the entire game-

Seriously, stick with Abyss, OP. It has the best music, best characters, and best plotline. ;)

I'm pretty much with you on most of the characters, what Vesperia DID have going for it was the improved battle system for one. While I still die a little each time I have to read the name (seriously? EFR-LMBS?) it was a lot of fun (despite how broken some elements were... well nearly all tales games suffer this any way). But I did think they did a good job with the world construction, even though its pretty standard practice for (most, mainstream) tales games to include competing world powers, malfunctioning world element, marginalized groups oppressed by another, friendshiiiiiip... and that's why I love all the games so much.

But bamco can go eat a dick for releasing the game like they did on the 360 and the ps3. Yeah, I'm still mad.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yessss, the battle system was glorious, except I prefer the Overlimit method in TotA to the one in ToV. x_X I STILL can't figure out how to use goddamn Mystic Artes in ToV, if you even can at all, and it bothers me that all of the party members just share ONE Overlimit meter, versus each character having a second one. -sigh- Oh well. At least there's Repede. :/

And yeah, Bamco really does like to be infuriating with games and releases and whatnot. Just like how the PS2 version of Symphonia had so much extra content, INCLUDING a fight versus Kratos, Mithos, and Yuan all at the SAME TIME. Arrgh. Not to mention how the producers of TotA stated that THEY KNEW WHO IT WAS AT THE END, THEY KNEW WHETHER OR NOT IT WAS LUKE OR ASCH OR LORELEI OR SOME OTHER KIND OF FUSION, AND THEY PURPOSELY LEFT THAT OUT. ARRESAGJKDLS;AG;SAGJEA!!!!! So frustrating!! I'm hoping they include the REAL ending on the 3DS version, and that they LOCALIZE that version, but honestly I know I shouldn't have my hopes up, because . . . well, this is Bamco we're talking about. ><

But still. Frustrating beyond belief, so I know how you feel on that. >

[identity profile] noetma.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
What I kind of didn't like about ToV's overlimit was that 1) I could never get the "use 1 bar, 2 bars, or 3 bars" right and would just end up wasting them all like a dummy (but it was seriously confusing!) and 2) the fact that repeat OL rita + meteor storm = a very, very quick game

I'm pretty excited for the 3DS port, despite the fact that NA or EU will most likely.. never see it (like that layton / gyakuten saiban crossover game. Damn, I'm mad about that too)

They pulled the same shit for wii owners with Tales of Graces. Seriously, I think they get their rocks off on pissing on their fans in japan.

[identity profile] itako.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry to jump in, but you know that Tales isn't making all that much money? Heck, porting it to a sony system is probably their way of covering their losses since most rpg fans own a ps3. I mean I used to be super mad troll back in the days when Rebirth wasnt translated (though it wasnt a great game to start wtih) but I don't think Bamco is sitting there laughing at the plight of the poor international Tales fans. And actually Nintendo gives a lot of gaming companies incentives to make games on their system.

And I've played both symphonia versions and it was pretty much the same thing. I felt more like they were trying to hype it on the ps2 system to be like "PLEASE BUY IT WE NEED MONEY".

[identity profile] noetma.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I know they (tales studio, afaik) are way into debt, and it makes me sad because I really like their games. And I understood when they did it with symphonia, because that was more of 'here are some exclusive extras, buy it please" but I feel Vesperia was almost inexcusable- even though the evidence that Patty existed ever since the 360 version is circumstantial, I feel like it was pushing it to leave out 2 playable characters from one version of the game to the next. Symphonia on both consoles was largely the same. Releasing the 'beta' as some people call it on the 360 and then the ps3 version just seemed... I don't know, it left a bad taste in my mouth.

[identity profile] itako.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I havent played the 360 version (lack teh xbox) and I'm still charging through most of the ps3 one but my friend who finished the 360 version basically recalls it the same way as I play it.

I don't know if its actually the ps3 version is superior. Flynn doesn't even freaking join till the end permanently - I can barely regard him as a playable character. Patty's story is awkwardly put between dungeons and events to make it look like "hey! she's with you now!". Storywise and gamewise it's pretty much the same, I was using two walkthroughs, a Japanese 360 and ps3 one because I was shuffling through things I might have missed and they both recite the exact same things. Even the events are mostly identical. And the extra ones, barely add anything to the plot.

The battle system I cant tell, since I havent really played the 360.

I dont know, I just feel like the ps3 version was overhyped by bother the company and the fans to make the product seem so much superior.

I mean there's other companies that are like "we repackaged it! and now there's a new playable character!" so it's more of a marketing strategy than say, anything actually interesting to the story.

[identity profile] noetma.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Somehow, I suspected they would do that with included Patty and Flynn. I don't know anyone who personally played the ps3 version, I've only looked at the list of add ons from the wikipedia page. It just seemed to me they added a lot on, some of it good and some of it kind of desperate. I am kind of jealous of the full voice acting, as a fan of the original voices.

I just kind of wish they had gone the route of "make one big, good, solid game, release on 2 platforms" instead of the usual "exclusive for a year, enhanced game for more popular console in japan" ... Honestly, I don't know which one would be more profitable for them, considering their current financial status.

[identity profile] itako.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
There is the possibility they probably used the money from the xbox version to make the ps3 version, with extra bells and whistles. The gaming industry is evil like that because unless their name is Kojima, they need your money.

I like the voices bit though, it's like a huge luxury as opposed to back in the Destiny days when they would only talk in battle or grunt.

[identity profile] noetma.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I like the trend on more voices (like skits, that was a really nice change in Vesperia) and... making 1/8 scale figures of male characters, haha. But yeah, it's a shame ToA never got an 'expanded' version... then again, I think that was one of the tales games that came out pretty solid to begin with. (For its time, sheesh, I can't believe it's been 5 years)

[identity profile] itako.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's like when I was looking at the website and it was like 15th anniversary! Next Tales of for ps3! And I had the face of "WHUT" at the 15 years bit. Time flies.

The Flynn figure looks kind of awkward though :( Or maybe he's just always been like that lol.

[identity profile] noetma.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, 15 holy crap. I'm still pretty excited, can't really help it. (I don't even own a ps3... yet)

he DOES look a tad awk, but it's an improvement from the littler ones, I say (Also I love Alter figs...) Yuri's looks so good though. Dang.

[identity profile] itako.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
ps3 prices are getting lower, (thank god) I remember when the price tag was enough to make me see stars. Though I didnt actually buy one until I had a steady job for several months :x (and I had to race to buy it before I accidentally dropped money on something more ridiculously expensive)

Alter figs are pretty well done (though that may be more for their work in making dolls with extra (or no) chest and ass)

I like the one coin ones, though I only bought one and it turned out to be Raven so I was satisfied enough :D

[identity profile] corrakun.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
i have nothing useful to contribute to this but i didn't know people actually used my icons

thank you for making my... my week omg

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I can't say anything about Abyss -- AS IT WAS NEVER RELEASED IN EUROPE *will never stop being bitter about that* -- but as for Vesperia... I don't think the time has much to do with your problem; there's never really been a huge Western fandom. You can get doujinshi for pretty much any pairing imaginable, but when it comes to English fanfics you're pretty much shit outta luck if you want something other than Flynn/Yuri.

[identity profile] itako.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Not any pairing really, a lot of DJ ARE Flynn/Yuuri Flynn/Estelle, Yuuri/Estelle and anything raping Raven.

It makes me forget that there's more than 4 characters in Vesperia lol.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I did say "pretty much" -- and I was also mentioning it in comparison with English fanfics, so...

That said, I really do consider Vesperia doujinshi to have some of the best variety when it comes to pairings (of course there's gonna be a lot of Yuri/Flynn with how OTPy they are, but it's hardly overpowering IMHO). Coming into that after certain other fandoms, such diversity was really a nice change.

[identity profile] itako.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's always so hard for me to do the final dungeon, I always do it super slowly and backtrack 100 times because I never want the game to end :(

[identity profile] goldenveila.livejournal.com 2010-11-06 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Vesperia secret! (My main fandom, represent~ ♥)

Aww, anon, why do you feel alone? I know the fandom is smaller...but it exists. :( I wish it were more active sometimes, too, though. I guess Vesperia suffers because it was kind of rushed, so the world takes a bit more imagination to flesh out (the amount of towns you can explore, for example, can be rather pitiful) and there's some weird plot fail in the final third. But I still adore the main cast and Vesperia's world, in the end.
