I completely agree. It was obvious he was ALWAYS going to stay dead, and if he had come back to life his death (and the beauty of his revelation that he WAS alive, that he WAS loved, and that he truly cared for Yukimi and Miharu, and had a home with them, etc) in the beginning would have been trivialized. By simply making Miharu remember him, Kamatani tied up all loose ends concerning their friendship and insured Nabari would, in a way, always be about them.

Now, I still hated the ending. But that wasn't because Yoite didn't come back to life. It's 'cause she left so many unanswered plot holes, didn't give Kouichi and Shijima any closure with their close friends, and let Tobari live because...she liked him and didn't want him to die? Yeah. :/ But I'll shut up because none of that is a secret. :P

I didn't hate that he survived. I just didn't like that they made such a big deal about him dying (Miharu even decided standing for what Tobari believed in was more important than going against his wishes and saving his life) just for Kamatani to randomly decide, "...wait! No! He's really going to live!"

the Yoite lover in me wanted him to ride down from heaven on a rainbow and arrive in Miharu's okonomiyaki shop in a cloud of fairy dust and for them to live happily ever after. the good writing lover in me wanted him to stay dead.

I just prefer not to think about anything past chapter fifty. :(

IMO the manga got better once he was dead. He started out somewhat okay as a character but the immense wangst he generated, and the fact that the story turned into a Yoite/Miharu h/c affair made me drop the manga for a long time.
