There's the difference in that most guys who like loli want to fuck the pure innocent loli. *Most* girls who are into shota would want to *be* the pure innocent shota and be swept off their feet by the older man.

In practice, they're both fictional pedophilic relationships though, so the distinction is minor.

[identity profile] doktordeathray.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa, do you actually know any shota fans? Pretty sure that's not usually the case.
Regardless, shotacon and lolicon are on the same level and fandom double standards about that are infuriating. If a guy admits to watching mahou shoujo anime it's creepy and he's a pervert, but if a Kuroshitsuji fangirl openly has the hots for Ciel it's totally okay...?

(Anonymous) 2010-11-05 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
These are marketing facts, not my opinion. Most shota - canon shota, not fan-shota - is designed to have the viewer empathize with the boy, not the older man, like most yaoi - canon yaoi, not fan-yaoi - is designed to have the viewer sympathize with the uke. Most loli is designed to have the viewer empathize with the older man, not the girl. Read up on shota/loli producers in Japan; that's how it works.

I never said that either of those were more or less okay than the other. I'm not judging anyone, only saying what one of the differences is in the genres themselves.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-06 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Where'd you get these facts? Most of the particularly pornographic shota I've seen looks to be made for the viewer to identify with the older man (especially in the mangas I've read, but that may be due to the fact that I have read a lot more shota manga than shota anime). I'll give the example of Boku no Piko; the older man is very plain and "relatable" while there's a huge focus on the eroticising of the young boy.

Not to mention, I know a lot of women/girls personally who are shota fans and are attracted to the young boys and identify with the older man's role (even if they themselves identify as females in other circumstances).

Going anon because not a ton of people know I used to watch/read shota. -_-;

(Anonymous) 2010-11-05 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"if a Kuroshitsuji fangirl openly has the hots for Ciel"

Er? That isn't "shota." That's a fangirl having a crush. Ages of fictional characters rarely have anything to do with their maturity level or physical appearance anyway, so I don't see how that's relevant to the shota discussion. Now if you were talking about "a girl admitting to watching shota series" that would be more to the point. But I just wanted to point out that the things you're comparing aren't... comparable.

LOL, what.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-05 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
If we're talking in animanga, then it's true? Ciel does not act 13 years old on a mental level, most characters in high school act like they're 20+ years old... nearly every character I've come across in years of reading manga acts and looks older than they are. People like in the example swooning over Ciel would not swoon over a real 13 year old boy because real 13 year old boys don't display Ciel's mental maturity. Nor do real 16 year old boys act like Ichigo Kurosaki, or 15 year old boys like Uzumaki Naruto...

There are other child/teenage characters in anime besides that ONE EXAMPLE you keep using

(Anonymous) 2010-11-06 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't use it, [livejournal.com profile] doktordeathray is who brought up the example, so I countered it. Sure, there are other characters besides Ciel. Some of them might act immature enough to be believable teenagers. But if you're talking mainstream animanga? A majority of the time, age is a number slapped on to characters to increase sales and appeal to a certain demographic. Forgetting animanga, if you look at JRPGs and J-games in general, it's the same thing.

[identity profile] doktordeathray.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's just that our definitions differ then it's not worth getting into, but I meant 'shota' as in 'young male character who is designed to be attractive', not as in 'yaoi or hentai featuring a young male character'.

And no, they really are comparable- mahou shoujo anime tend to feature young female protagonists, Kuroshitsuji features a young male protagonist. Both are designed to be endearing or appealing.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-06 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oh sorry I was a different anon. XD I meant you can't compare a crush on an underage fictional character to people who watch explicit loli or shota, because lots of the time the character isn't portrayed as childlike, like Ichigo Kurosaki does not act like a real 16 year old boy, he just is one because the author says so while seeming to be much more mature, while in shota their childishness and innocence is the point.

I explained myself more clearly in the thread above. For the record I'm not judging one side to be worse than the other.

[identity profile] jade-lightning.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Saying that that's how it's marketed is one thing but your original comment is still dumb as fuck.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-05 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it really so dumb to say that the types of people that this stuff is marketed toward, will be the majority of the people who consume it?

Romance novels are marketed toward women who want to project themselves as the heroine. Most romance novel readers are women who want to project themselves as the heroine. Nobody is saying that there aren't other readers out there, but they are the majority.

[identity profile] jade-lightning.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. You don't know why every person consumes it or who they're projecting themselves on. Saying that's how it was marketed is one thing but until you have real, actual proof of who's the majority it's just a (dumb) assumption.

In my experience it's more women that watch both loli and shota and who they're projecting on varies so much I can't tell you what's more common. Also in my experience men are just more likely to admit things like this in public. Someone else could have run into something different but my point is that you can't say things like that unless you know exact numbers.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Since you need it spelled out for you

How the hell do you know why women get off to shota, or exactly what they're thinking when they enjoy it? How do you know they're all projecting, and that some women don't actually find male children attractive, in the same way that male pedophiles find female children attractive?

BTW, I enjoy romantic stories about older men and younger women (like 20 or 30-something year old guys with teenage girls) because I empathize or imagine myself as the girl (which is creepy, but I was technically raped by an adult man as a teenager, so... there you go). So your statement that people are only into loli because they see themselves as the "man" is stupid (not only that, but most loli anime/manga have few male characters or none at all).

(Anonymous) 2010-11-05 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we're getting our signals mixed. I'm talking about canon loli and shota series, which have explicitly loli and shota content, and you're talking about series which have characters in them that could be classified as loli or shota. Which are very different things.
ext_81845: mashmyre cello facepalming, from the anime zz gundam (facepalm)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, stories where grown men have sex with teenage girls are considered loli by some, but yes, I see the difference. It was just an example for you to see how people "project" themselves into stories different ways. The point is that lots of people who enjoy loli "wish to be the little girl" (as the apocryphal saying by Moot goes).

Also, it doesn't matter, there are men and women who fap to underage characters in "normal" series, too. That's not really any different than "explicit loli and shota content," since the attraction is still there.
