I would see nothing wrong with it if they thanked a general community. The OP didn't say anything about it being a fanfiction comm. I've known authors who have thanked their livejournal fans or even special comms in their books. Not personally but I've read their books I mean.

Yeah, there are even TV writers who give open shout-outs to their LJ comms and such (Dan Harmon, you big lug, I'm looking at you).

As long as she doesn't give away she's read their stories (I believe OP said something about writing for one of the comms and receiving criticism. So I think it's safe to assume there's fanfiction involved.) As a published writer you are advised not to look at ANY fanwork to avoid intellectual property lawsuits for any future ideas.

Yes of course there are always fanfiction involved but an author can still thank the livejournal community for their support otherwise and not mention another like the OP intended. Of course they shouldn't mention reading fanfiction if they did that. And it might cause a backlash from the bigger comunity because they weren't mentioned.
