I don't know what it's really called but I call it 'removal'. And I do it. By putting the problem on someone else - someone you identify with, care about, etc. but that is fictional - it lets you take a step back from the situation. It gives you just the right amount of distance from it to look at it a bit more subjectively. It makes it safe to deal with because it's not happening to you anymore, it's happening to someone who is a stand-in for you. It might be weird but I think it's healthy and a safe way to deal with things that otherwise would be overwhelming. The character you've given the problem to gets the comfort you wish for and so deals with the problem - which in a way has given you enough distance to deal with the problem - or at least blunt it - yourself. It's a strange form of living vicarious - but it works and at the end of the day, that's what counts.

though - I've got friends forty and over and there's not a single one of us that isn't still working on this 'adult' thing. That's the secret they never tell you - it's a lifelong process getting where you're going. So don't feel ashamed - find some solid friends you know you can trust and reach out to them. Because fiction is nice - but real friends are awfully nice too and not only is it possible it would make them feel better to be able to help - you just might hit something they're wrestling with themselves as well.
