I have that same problem with (some) het too. There are various fics, with even the most quirky, independent female characters, that still try to fit the dynamics of the relationship in a blue or pink box.

Hell, some slash is even having that same problem too, in regards to the stupid idea that someone is the "girl," and someone is the "guy." Blegh!

Exactly.

This is why I love having a fandom where there's canon fem!dom. And not just because that's a personal kink, it means nobody's personalities get raped. Woo!

[identity profile] angearia.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Writing characters as OOC isn't about genre. Bad writing is bad writing, whether it's het, slash or gen.

[identity profile] neocloud9.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I still can't seem to focus on the text of this secret because HELLO GORGEOUS SHANA ART~

From the movie, I'm guessing? That's a retelling of the first arc, right?

[identity profile] kiraya.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe you've only read shitty het.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
But if you write female characters as outstanding and amazing and wonderful, people shout "Mary Sue" at you!

Can't win, might as well write (and read) regardless.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
++

The answer, I suppose, is to write interesting, relatable characters who are special and good, but who are also believable and flawed. Real people, in other words. Easy as pie, of course.

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
All orientations of romance fic can be prone to that, actually. :/

(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
And yaoi fics don't turn one or both of the guys into simpering fools? Don't make me laugh. That's a lousy excuse.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
They do, and quite often, but, unfortunately, it still happens more often in het.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you know, that's just bad writing. You're more sensitive to it with these female characters because they're a little more rare. And lots of folks can't conceive of romance that doesn't follow really old tropes.

[identity profile] unifilar.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
...nope. No matter how many times I read this secret, I still don't understand what the heck they're getting at. Slash writers write girls better? All female het writers are "ordinary" and "lack charisma"? What?

(Anonymous) 2010-11-15 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
They said nothing about slash. I understood it as: girls in fanfiction often turn out to be ordinary and lacking charisma, so OP wonders maybe it's because female het writers are ordinary themselves, so they are unable to create extraordinary fictional women.

[identity profile] respectskater.livejournal.com 2010-11-14 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Bad writing is bad writing, no matter the pairing. Slash writers can butcher the characters just as well as het writers, just as well as gen writers.

No, the real reason you can't stand het fanfic is because you're misogynist.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Internalized or otherwise.

Own it, get over it.

Re: No, the real reason you can't stand het fanfic is because you're misogynist.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just not true.
Not liking the girly girl mentality doesn't make you a misogynist. Give me a powerful, amazing woman who thinks not about baking and makeup, but about power and freedom, who's active in bed, who has a sharp mind--and I'm read about her all day long.

Re: No, the real reason you can't stand het fanfic is because you're misogynist.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-15 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes, of course. If you don't like het, you are clearly a misogynist. And if you don't like slash, you're obviously homophobic. If you don't like every time of pairing, you are an evil, bigoted asshole.

Re: No, the real reason you can't stand het fanfic is because you're misogynist.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-15 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, so disliking a lot of het fanfic because it takes a female character and takes away a lot of her personality to put her into a relationship with a man is misogyny? lol okay.

Re: No, the real reason you can't stand het fanfic is because you're misogynist.

(Anonymous) 2010-11-15 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
lol think what you want, I still don't like het. You think I'm a misogynist, whatever shall I do

Hi, slash taught me how to stop acting out misogynistic relationship tropes IRL.

[identity profile] hologrphcbuddha.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
slash-vs-het is so 2005, man

I would hardly say the phenomenon you describe is unique to het fic

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
So you don't like bad het. Welcome to the club. Ask for recs of better het? If the quality of the majority of EVERYTHING were to dictate our tastes in fandom, we'd all be better off watching paint dry...

(Anonymous) 2010-11-15 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I understand what OP means. I noticed in even decent het, female characters tend not to be larger than life. Even if they are, in canon. Writers sort of liked to bring them back to earth. Whereas the same is more rarely done to male characters, which are the object of adoration.
