(Anonymous) 2010-11-14 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)I know you've moved past that attitude, so this is not directed at you, but I've always had such a hard time understanding this way of thinking. If a person thinks being in fandom is wasting their time, or is somehow inferior to other hobbies, why on earth are don't they just GTFO and do something else?
Personally I think writing, making art, discussing the ins-and-outs of your favourite books/shows/films/managa/whathaveyou are excellent ways to use one's time. I like to go clubbing or hanging out with RL friends too, and there is no 'either/or' here for me.
Sometimes I want to sit on my arse and write, other times I want to party. Everyone are more or less like that, whether they're in fandom or not. Sometimes I feel like sections of fandom imagine life for non-fandom people like one long party and/or orgy.
It's truly strange to me. Don't your parents sit and read some evenings, or have dinner parties where they discuss e.g. a play or a book in-depth? Or even have long email debates with colleagues, or just need a lot of time to sit and write, alone?
I think so called 'normal life' and 'fandom life' are very much alike, but I sometimes feel I'm in the minority not seeing this huge divide between fandom and RL.
Regarding the OP, I feel truly sad (both for you and the friend(s) you're envious of), and hope you'll get help to conquer your profound self-esteem problems.
