I think it's the foreign-ness, quite honestly.

Most of these people would be the last to call themselves xenophobes, but they've internalized plenty, and there's something about being involved in a fandom for a non-white, non-christian (and indeed never, save for a few daimyo), non-"western" society's products that many people have a serious problem with.

The ones who receive the most vitriol are the ones who make efforts to learn Japanese, eschew western television and music, and dream of emigrating to Japan. Maybe their perceptions of what the country is like are deeply flawed, maybe they're a little annoying, but think as to why *these* traits are the ones which get derided the most?

People are probably going to make fun of you for the ultra-PC way you wrote this, and because LOL HATING ANIMU ISN'T SRS BSNS YOU GUYS.

But you make some good points, and I hope it makes some of these anti-"weeaboo" people step back for a minute and really think about what they're saying.

At the same time, some of the fans who are more obsessed with Japan and Japanese culture bother me, like they are fetishizing the culture precisely because it's foreign. I don't think everyone who learns Japanese, admires the culture and wants to visit is like that of course, but you can kind of tell the more insane people apart from those (these are the people who will insist that Japanese culture is soooooo different from Western culture that it's practically alien, as if we don't have anything in common -- or they will even insist that it's superior).

I chalk it up to the zeal of a convert. The more you dislike your birth society, the easier it is to overlook the flaws of another - I wouldn't call it fetishizing. (And most of these people frankly aren't very informed to begin with.) It's not because foreign-ness is "cool" or anything like that, so it doesn't really bother me, even if some of them get a little reactionary.

(Except insisting that Japan is practically alien. The one thing I've learned growing up online is that there's far more that we all have in common than that sets us apart.)

Haha yeah. Japan is less kawaii and sparkly IRL and is a bit less colourful. There's no 1/5 chance of stumbling into a cafe and being turned half-cat and no chance of finding weird ninjas.
